Question:
A RUDE AWAKENING!!!!!!

Hello all my OH friends!! I would like to share something VERY important! I had RNY 8 months ago. I had to do a 4 week liquid diet prior to my surgery date, in which I lost 35 pounds! So, when I started this I weighed 408. Day of surgery I weighed in at 373. Ok, so as of today I weigh 260. I havent lost any weight at all since July 17th. So, I was chalking it up to having hit a plateau. I know we all hit those. I figured I had been eating ok, and working out 30 min day. I thought I was ok. I was eating all fat-free, sugar-free foods, what could I POSSIBLY be doing wrong. Well, at the end of my rope, I sent in my menu to my NUT, asking her what I was doing wrong. WELLLLLL, I WAS DOING EVERYTHING WRONG!! I figured as long as it was no fat and no suger, I could consume it. I just wanted to share a list of things that we as RNY patients should stay away from. I want everyone to be achieve their goals, because I know what its like to struggle myself. Foods to avoid, and if you already know this, I apologize, just trying to help. ANY KIND OF crackers, chips, pretzels, cerals, potatoes, cheese, milk, sweets of ANY kind, protein bars, protein drinks. I was told I can have ANY kind of lean meats, eggs, beans, any vegetables except for potatoes, and I could have apples, pears, melons, and plums. I know every NUT is different, but just for people who might be on a plateau that seems to be lasting a little TO long, hopefully this will help. God bless you all!!    — jackie L. Beare in mind that different nutritionists say different things. Sweets are a no-no, of course, because of the dumping problem, but the other things are not necessarily. The important thing, however, is to get the protein in first, and the reality is if you are getting enough protein, you're not going to have room for much else. Everyone is different, however, and what your nutritionist might think is best for you may be different than what's best for someone else. There are people on this boards who eat almost nothing but protein shakes and bars and have lost all their weight and kept it off.

Thank you Jackie for trying to help others. I appreciate you very much. I personally would trust what your nut said over someone who hasn't even had the surgery and no nut will agree that only protein drinks and bars is good for you like the folks in Burbank California. We are supposed to get our protein from food first and foremost. I have been at a PLATEAU for way way too too long now. I am sooooooooo frustrated. Thanks a bunch again. God Bless you always.........Renee

Hi ! I am 15 months out and lived on milk and cheese while losing weight. If I hadn't eaten them, I would not have gotten my protein in. And I discussed protein bars with my nutritionist who said lots of people do well with the south beach bars. I eat one a day, most days. I do agree that crackers etc and sweets are bad. But.. look at the ingredients.. it only takes a glance to know they are bad. I did, however, eat triscuits with peanut butter early on and did very well.My nutritionist said if it says whole wheat flour, its ok. Everyone needs to find whats right for them. Best of luck to all! hugs, kim

Thanks for you input, it's always helpful to hear from others. I too hit stalls for 2 weeks at a time, which is very frustrating. My NUT said the protein bars are O.K. just don't rely on them for you major portion of protein. If I'm on the run and very busy, I will have one to get me through, but I have lost 70 lbs. since May, so I'm not going to worry about it, the big thing is to READ labels on everything you put in your mouth!!

Thank you very much for trying to help others. I have done very well, but I have a strange schedule. I do protein powder in my coffee in the morning so that I start the day with protein. I cut my "supreme" protein bars into bit sized squares and use it as my snacks during the day. However, there are days when I get a terrible craving for fruit or veggie and I eat as much of them as I want... if at the end of the day I have not consumed enough protein I drink a shake as my late nite snack. One thing you need to remember is that every person is different. One more thing to think about is what my nut calles "slider" foods. all carbs are sliders, yogurt, cottage cheese etc... anything that will turn to mush in your mouth after 45 - 60 seconds is a slider... it does not stay in your pouch long enough to keep you full. I wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted on how the new foods work out for you.

I do n ot agree with this. I was told to eat mashed potatoes...and baked or boiled potatoes. You need a few carbs in your diet. Cheese is a great source of protein....so that is wrong. Cereal you can have. I have a pour of cheerios in the morning and it goes down well. Chips and all that...well, yes, those are "bad" carbs.....and no sweets. I think your NUT has to be educated a little more.

I do not appreciate your response to what I said. "Shut my mouth?" Excuse me? This is a question/answer/opinion forum....I can say whatever I have experienced or have heard from my dietician. I do believe she or he is educated in specific bariatric diets. Maybe they are a dietician...but not in the specific subject. FYI-I had my surgery almost 8 weeks ago and have lost 54 lbs...I MUST be doing something right!!!!! LOL...My dietician MUST be on track! Also...remember that everything you hear will not always be positive....on here or anywhere else. Don't tell people to shut their mouths...it is very rude. Good luck to you.
