I have the lap band and I wish that sweets would make me sick. I get full when I eat food no matter what kind of food. I have developed a adversion to ice-cream. I use to be able to eat it but now, I have to throw it up. My mistake was to even start trying to eat sweets as I love them as well. Susan

Hi Pat, I chose the RNY over the Lap Band because I was addicted to sweets and knew I'd still be able to eat them with the Lap Band. And I knew I would test how far I could go (even with the RNY) after surgery. Dumping is definitely not fun, but exactly what I need to keep away from the stuff that I seem to have very little willpower over. Best of luck to you on your decision.

It is easy to gain weight with the lap band if you eat sweets that are soft. Like ice cream, shakes, chocolate, cake etc. As for getting sick with sweets no. The dumping syndrome happens for gastric bypass patients. Not all of us get the dumping syndrome. Even a person with other types of WLS can gain back too. I have had the lap band then revision to the RNY on 7/9/09. Also even if you like sweets now your taste might change along with not liking sweets. I would if I were you consider other types of WLS. This is just my personal choice. Good luck with your decision. I hope I was of any help.

I purposely got Gastric Bypass so I would FOR SURE stay away from sweets. I do not dump at all. Thankfully I am doing well in my journey. When making your decision about what kind of surgery you will have, keep in mind that you need to have as much willpower and perseverance as for any other lifestyle change (quitting smoking, drinking etc.) It is NOT easy, but it feels REAL GOOD when you start seeing and feeling the progress. Good luck to you.

I am thanking my lucky stars that I did get the grastric by-pass instead of the lap-band, because I am like you, addicted to sweets. Now I never think about cake, cookies, candy, and all the rest. Good luck with whatever choice you make!

See, I had the opposite. Since I had surgery, I don't crave sweets now like I use to. I've noticed a lot of things just taste different. Of course, that might just be a mind set. You still need to change your eating habits no matter what surgery you have. Good luck!

No it doesn't...but RNY GB doesn't make all patients dump or have reactions to sugar either...Some RNYers are far more carb sensitive than others...When I work out hard...I can eat some sugar/carbs...and other days...I am very sensitive and will have a lot of pain for eating just a little sugar and/or carbs. Like some other wise people said...YOU have to make the change and decide NOT to eat sugar...I have as well even though I do dump, I can eat quite a bit before it gets to that point...and anytime I have had small or larger weight gains...it was from SUGAR! Lapband is NOTHING except restriction (as long as your fills are good) It can take a while to get it right (what they call the "sweet spot") Many on lap band learn immediately how to fail their surgery by grazing and eating sliders and drinking their calories...It's the main reason I decided to have RNY...I was counting on dumping and restiction and no hunger just long enough that I could make the changes I needed to on my own with the help of my surgery...and that is exactly what happened! BUT...I must say that it is a constant decision on my part to stick to my surgery rules and not eat sugar or graze all day or drink my calories just as I could easily do with any of the surgeries! You must commit to the life long diet changes...

I am not trying to be mean, so please don't take me that way. If these are the thoughts you're having, you are not ready for surgery at all. I get the addiction to sugar/carbohydrates, because I was addicted, too. Just having surgery is not going to fix the addiction. IMO, you need to see a therapist to address the addiction, and then decide which wls is best for you and your lifestyle. This is going to be a life changing event, and one needs to be ready, mind, body and spirit. Otherwise, the chance of failure is huge. This is all just my opinion. I'm sometimes not the best in wording my responses, so I truly hope I did not offend you.
