I have CHF and need to lose the weight. However I have been over weight my whole life. What should I do?    — lscheller (posted on September 6, 2008)

I am on the verge of having CHF and I was pretty much ordered in a way by my primary physician to have this surgery done as soon as possible so that it does not completely set in. 5 months later, I am having RNY on Sept. 15th. Everyone is different and feels different about the surgery, but if you have eliminated all other efforts of losing weight, then it is probably a very good idea to have it done. You may eliminate all CHF affects that you have in the end. But before you do decide to have surgery, do a lot of research. Hope some of this helps you out. Best of luck to you. :)

The weight loss from surgery will help reverse your symptoms associated with CHF. You would be helping yourself, prolonging your life, and improving the quality of your life by having WLS (weight loss surgery). I had RNY Gastric Bypass 7 months ago and have lost 85 pounds so far. My blood pressure and blood sugar are now very normal - without medications. I am putting a hyperlink below, to CBS News.com where there is a 12-minute video from the TV show "60 Minutes." it's about the benefits of RNY Gastric Bypass surgery. It is a video well-worth watching. You can copy & paste the follwing in to your browser: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/04/17/60minutes/main4023451.shtml

I was overweight all my life until I had the surgery. You are the only one who can determine to have it or not to have it. No one can make that decision for you. Now will your health improve if you have the surgery? YES it will as long as you follow your Dr. instructions. Good luck in your decision. I am here to help. Please feel free to ask any questions you want.

This is a loaded question for us to answer for you. The heart specialist is one of the doctor s that can give you a good answer because your heart is weak and they need to make sure they do everything possible to avoid added complications. I would get two opinions from different heart specialist aleast before making my decision to have wls. This is just a thought. I hope it goes well for you.

i don't know what chf is, but if you are 325 lbs and are willing to make a change for the betterment of your life, if you want to add years to your life, if you want to enjoy friends and family-do it? i am 17 days out and i am a posterchild for gbs-i tell everyone i can. no, it is not for everyone, but sometimes people feel trapped and need a push of encouragement to do something for themselves. i wish the best for you, kim

I have CHF and it was very severe before my surgery three years ago. I could not walk from the parking lot into work without stopping to sit down. I was short of breath all the time and was on about six meds. The surgery has given me back my health. I can walk, go up stairs - no more edema or shortness of breath. My sleep apnea also went away.

I don't like to tell people to have surgery or not...but if I was you and I was faced with the reality of dying much sooner than later or having a chance at becoming healthier, thinner, and give my heart a chance to heal too...well, it would be an easy decision for me. It's all yours though...Good luck with your decision

I was having problems with BP and CHF before my surgery. I was 300 lbs. Within 2 weeks after surgery, I was down 20lbs. (all water) and my BP was back to normal and no more CHF. All gone. It's an amazing surgery. Don't hesitate. It's worth it. I am now 6 mos. post-op and down 85 lbs. Good luck, Paula B.

Hi I have CHF and I was 390# My heart Drs kept asking me to consider the surgery but I was scared. My only regret is that I waited so long to have the surgery. I have lost 114# and I had my gastric bypass on March 25. You will feel better. I no longer take blood pressure meds but I still take Coreg 25 mg 2XS a day. It is a win win situation for CHF. It takes a big load off of our hearts. Please feel free to email me if you want to hear more or just need encouragement. [email protected] Luck Bev
