Question:
Has anyone had a weight loss surgery while taking Prednisone?
I have Sarcoidosis and take the oral steroid Prednisone i am on a low dose now but will need to take 5mg every other day for maintenance. I am considering surgery and worried there is a risk associated with this medication — skerner (posted on July 11, 2008)

Your Surgeon will confrim for you that this drug is acceptable or what to
take in its place. I took it before surgery, but they had me come off of
it while in the hospital as restart following surgery. Each surgeon has
their own rules, so it is best to ask their advise.

Hi I am 3 years post op and I had a baby 11 months ago. While I was
pregnant I had to take high dosages of prednisone due to low platelets
during pregnancy. The doctors told me there was no problem with me taking
it because of my surgey or pregnancy. I felt fiine taking it and haven't
had any problems since I stopped taking it.

My doc just had me take a good antacid with it. Zegrid...but it is
prescription. He says it can damage a pouch if not taken with some kind of
antacid to line the pouch and with plenty of liquid and some food if
possible. I took it shortly after my surgery for an upper respiratory, and
chronic cough right after my surgery. No problems. good luck!!!

Stacey - I have sarcoidosis also but I am not currently on any medications
for it. I spoke with my doctor who has done over 4500 surgeries and asked
about if I had to take it in the future if it would be a problem - he said
no. BUT I would check with your doctor and also look into what the other
person said about taking it with an antiacid. I have not had surgery yet
but if you want - keep in touch! Teri

I have asthma, asked this question and my surgeon said it wouldn't be a
problem. Because of the asthma and what's happened with previous surgeries,
I'd be shocked if I don't get solumedrol before and after my surgery.

I took prednisone for almost 8 yrs before wls for my Rheumatoid arthritis.
I had to stop it for 3 months before I could have wls. I only take it now
if my RA flare ups are really bad and there are lots of joint swelling and
pain. Low dose though like 5mg where before wls it was 15mg. I also had to
not be able to get any cortisone shots anywhere before wls for the
prednisone and the cortisone prevents healing or slows it. I also had to
come off of my RA meds as well for 3 months and that was a rough time for
me geting around and walking but i wanted wls and I did it. Could only take
tylenol extra strength during this time. Had to come off Ibuprofin and
flubiprofin as well for 3 months.
