Question:
having problems getting the protein in
almost 4 months out with the rny and about 75 lbs lost, firstly my hair is coming out, there is nothing more discouraging ladies than seeing get big handfuls of your hair not attached to your head, anyways my doctor told me i needed 50 grams of protein everyday and i hear people on here say its atleast 70, well i'm doing very bad at it all, i'm a vegetarian, i eat eggs and cheese and stuff but it doesn't add up to 50 grams, i drink the carnation instant breakfast but still its not where it should be, i get dizzy when i stand up and things along those lines, i'm not too sure what to do about it anymore, the shakes i've had are abominations — kickstyle (posted on July 2, 2007)

Hi Keesha,
I am preop, but was a vegetarian for 37 years until recently when I was
diagnosed with Kidney desease. Although I don't eat a lot of protien, I
will get most of it from fake meat made with soy. If you can eat a pice of
Salmon now and then that would help, but if not go to whole foods and get
protien bars and shakes and nible on them all the time. I have found that
Boca Burgers and soy things seem to have as much protein then real meat in
many instances and are lower in fat and digest easier. Try it

I was also a vegetarian for a long time (9 years or so) & soy, boca
& MorningStar Farms foods are loaded w/ protein!! Try them, if you
haven't already, but they are very yummy! good luck! Oh, yea, I also
GAINED alot of my weight while being a vegetarian,,being a veg, doesn't
mean that you eat healthy. I found I ate more bad carbs when I was a veg
than I do now. Anyway, try those soy items, they will boost up the protein
intake!

I found this website site called Bariatriceating.com they have recipes on
it and I'm sure you can get protein supplements from it also. Good luck:-)

I would suggest the soy protein, protein bars and all of the soy/veggie
items on the market - moring star and the like. I bought some
"sausage" patties, eat one on a 1/2 english muffin with whipped
cream cheese - or with a singles cheese in the AM for breakfast - SO good.
Tofu is another source. Not my personal fav, but people love it. Good luck.
OH...and try adding flavorless protein powder to everything you eat and
drink.

Have you tried the ISOPURE NO CARB protein drinks? Those have 40 grams of
protein. What I've started doing is having my Dr. Atkins in the morning
--which is 15 grams and by the time I get to work I start on the Isopure.
They are definitely an acquired taste, however, you can mix them with
water. Don't buy the orange -- NASTY.

Oh yeah shakes. I use Soy milk, frozen fruit, one scoop of whey protein, a
dash of vanilla and two packets of spenda and blend.

Go to this web site www.bariaticeatting.com there in the store you can get
protien supplements that are very good. I espescially like the Nector
protein, I get the lemon tea one and add crystal light on-the-go pack for
added flavoring very good.

I hated protein drinks too. I found GNC 50 grand slam in a can the easiest
and best. It is 50 grams of protein. I do not drink it all at once, but
half at a time with a little bit of milk to thin it down. You do need to
keep up your protein my DR & NUT say 75-100 grams a day. This protein
drink gives you at least half of that. Also do you eat peanutbutter,
cottage cheese, nuts and stuff? Wishing you well.. Judy R

If you are not offended by milk, there is a great high protein, low carb
milk called Carb Countdown... I lived on it for a long time.

i am almost veggie, but not quite. i do use whey, which was milk, long
ago, but excludes the lactose. 4 months is the usual hair loss time, lasts
about 2 months, so get that new hair growing! Any of these are what I
use:
1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender
or Magic Bullet).
2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken.
3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel
sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended.
4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz hot water, stirred or
hand blender.
Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon
fights belly fat.
I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of
vit D3).

You are definitely not getting enough protein in. Have you tried the
fitday.com website? You can keep an online journal of your foods and tally
up the grams of protein. Your hair falls out when you lose quickly and
don't have enough protein. Try taking biotin every day. There are many
good tasting protein powders out there...personally I like Walkers but the
ones from Vitamin World aren't bad either. You can order samples from
Bariatriceating.com and see what you like before spending money on huge
cannisters. I also like EAS ready to drink shakes alot. Did you have
bloodwork done for your 3 month post op? Your blood count is probably low
and that's why you are dizzy. You need to get with your nutritionist
immediately and talk to your doctor about your dizziness.

Try taking biotin. This is a vitamin for hair and nails. I am preop and I
am already taking this so that I don't have any problems with my hair. (I
hope)

There are some excellent suggestions here. I am with the person that
suggested the Biotin. I take 1000 units a day and have not had a big hair
loss. I am 6 mos out now. My daughter had surgery the day before me and her
hair is coming out by the handful. I sent her a bottle of Biotin this past
week. It is quite inexpensive at Walmart. $3.64 for 150 tablets. I am 55
years old and need all the help I can get to look good as the weight comes
off. Keeping my hair is important to me. Good Luck on your journey and God
Bless, Norma

I suggest New Whey liquid Protein. It's 42 g protein in only 3 oz and you
can dilute it if necessary. I drink 2 of these daily. I also will try the
suggested Biotin to help prevent hair loss. Good luck! Cherry

I am not a veg. but tried the morningstar sausage links and they were
pretty good.
I noticed on some of the answers people referred to items that would give
you 40 & 50 gm protein in one item. I was told by my dietician that
you body cannot absorb more than 30 gms protein at once, so you may want to
check this out before wasting the protein and still not getting enough in.
I was also told to get 60 gms protein. I am only a month out so this is all
new to me. But so far I am still filling in with alot of liquid proteins
such as Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom Smoothie (yogurt) 4 sugars, 8 proteins,
Carnation Instant Breakfast and string cheese.

Hi Keesha,
For the protien shakes, get some Davinci sugar free syrups your can find
them online. Also get some PB2 which is powdered peanut butter to add to
your shakes. Here is my morning shake, skim milk, a scoop on chocolate
protien powder, a package of carnation instant breakfast, PB2, chocolate
sugar free syrup, ice blend in my magic bullet and viola' I have a
chocolate peanut butter shake. If it werent for the sugar free syrups and
all the other products that I found from people on the lap band site, I
wouldnt be able to get down the protien shakes either. If you PM me your
email address, someone on the site was nice enough to email me a recipe
book and it gives recipes starting with protien shakes and right through
all the stages of the diets that we have to get through before getting to
regular food. I dont get to this site every day so bear with me and when I
see that you have sent me your email address I will send it over to you.
Good Luck! Lisa

HI,
I had the same problem I am now 2 months out and havent been getting enough
protein the whole time because the shakes were so nasty. I went to the
Vitamin Shoppe yesterday and got the protein bullets as recommened by my
doctor and they taste great it is 42 grams of protein they also have the
ones with 25 grams as well. You basically just gulp it down so if I liked
them then anyone should becase I couldnt do any protein drinks. I hope
this helps you.

Hi Keesha, thanks for writing. I am reading your question here, and I want
to just say Keesha, celebrate! I know something more discouraging that
losing hands full of hair! Having 75 pounds still stuck on my body instead
of gone! There are tons more things discouraging that losing hair. Honey,
it is just hair! I loved my hair, and lost a ton of it too, but I would
buy a wig if it got too bad, but I was not gonna let it get me down! I
lost 120 pounds and kept my hair very short for almost 2 years to get the
minimum amount of loss possible, but I still lost hair. It was a badge of
honor in a way, showing the weight loss and fighting for the health of my
body. It was an extremely SMALL price to pay for the benefit I got. You
need to look at that differently, and you will not be discouraged.
Regarding protein. I am not a vegetarian, but at your phase did not eat a
lot of meat. I got protein from cottage cheese, milk, lots of milk and the
other soft proteins. Milk was a big supplier for me. I think you might be
dizzy from lack of water maybe, hydration is so important and hard to keep
up, especially in the summer. You are doing great, pump up the water, keep
up the exercise, and try a few glasses of milk every day to pump up that
protein. You can also eat the beans from taco bell or make your own bean
items. They help a lot. Look around and look up and be encouraged. And
by the way, next time you are in the market, look at the margerine section,
and could 75 pounds of butter or margerine containers and know that all
that fat is no longer in your body! Celebrate. You are beautiful with or
without hair, who cares what others may or may not think. What you are
going through with your hair is temporary, so just hold on to that and keep
going! Take care. Patricia P.

GNC and online sell a great pudding called "Stallones Pudding"
it is the size of a small can of corn or beans. The protein content is
20grams per can. I think it tastes pretty good, especially if you add a
small ammount of Coolwhip Lite. The pudding is also sugarfree and lactose
free.

Hi Keesha, I needed to say one more thing that I forgot to say. As I began
my walk this morning, the though crossed my mind that perhaps potassium
could be an issue for you? Are you taking your multivitamins regular? I
try to eat half bananas (although I can eat a whole one now) and stuff that
helps me with potassium as well. You might want to get your blood checked
and be sure things are in balance, but be sure to keep up the vitamins and
calcium and iron, and drink plenty of water. This is hard work to lose
weight, it is not easy at all. We have to think about everything most of
the time, especially in the yearly phase. But Keesha, it is worth it, you
are worth it, and the sun is shining, and God is good, there is every
reason to celebrate the day and the successes. The struggles are gonna
come, but don't let them get the best of you. I will take being bald and
130 pounds to having all my hair and 250 pounds. I can walk, and play with
my children, and not feel humiliation in just getting around, or feel like
a couch potatoe, unless I want a day off. There is so much to celebrate,
there is not any time for me to waste a day on saddness, unless God calls
me to a suffering that requires a sad heart. Rejoice in The Lord always,
and again I say rejoice! Have a great day, This is the Day that The Lord
has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! Take care. Patricia P.

Hi, I have found a whey protein suppliment that I love and it is 42 grams
in each! It comes in different flavors. Hope you like it, it just may be
your answer.
IDSsports.com- the whey bullets(orange, grape, tropical,) they all are
doable.
Good luck.

You are lsoing really fast! It is hard to eat at first. The protein
shakes are horrible, but you have to drink them! My doctor wanted me to
get at least 90 of protein, and it was impossible.

Hi Keesha, I'm post-op and have lost 70 lbs since my surgery 3-12-07. I
wasn't getting the required amount of protein, either, so I got the
New-Whey Liquid Protein. It has 42g of protein and it's only 3oz. I
didn't want to try the Isopure, because the bottle is so big and I knew
that I wouldn't drink it all. I've been drinking the New-Whey for two
weeks now and I feel great. I also have a South Beach protein bar (10g),
140 calories for breakfast or a snack, so right there, I pretty much have
all of my protein for the day. The New-Whey tastes pretty good, too. I
also take a B-12 vitamin, iron pill (you may be dizzy, because not enuf
iron, anemia), calcium, and a multi-vitamin. I've never been fond of
taking pills, so for my calcium and multi-vitamin, I take Viactiv. For
your hair problem, I'd suggest Coconut Oil. The coconut oil prevents
breakage, split ends, makes hair grow, and adds a nice shine. It doesn't
have to be any particular brand. You can find it in CVS, Brooks, any
pharmacy in the Ethnic Hair Section. It's about $3.00 and it'll last you a
year. I'm not ethnic, but I've been using it since I was 17 years old (now
35) and I've always received compliments on my hair, which is long, thick,
and very healthy. My friends call me the "Breck girl". Good
luck!

I just started drinking the IDS New Whey protein recently. It doesn't have
the best taste, but it's 3.5 oz and you get 42g of protein. I also tried
the Isopure that people are talking about, but it is 20 oz of nastiness. I
am in the same place as you, I don't get the right amount of protein in,
most days I'm not even close, but since I started the New Whey it is
easier. Also that Stallone pudding is pretty good, the Muscle Milk Pudding
is gross though, made me sick......Good Luck!

rule of thumb is half your body weight is the amount of protein needed
daily. ?If you are dizzy when you stand you need to get back to your doctor
get a CMP done to check your blood. Get some drinks with at least 30 grams
of protein just make sure they are low carb
