Question:
Zithromax or other antibiotic post-op?

I have a cold/sore throat and am waiting to hear back from my doctor... I've been taking tylenol cold but wanted to know if I could take zithromax or another antibiotic if prescribed to me for this cold... anyone know?    — SJSlesnick (posted on March 15, 2006)

You should not have any problem taking antibiotics provided they are not time released. Because we don't absorb the time released don't stay in the system long enough to get it in our system. Good luck Denise

I'm with the first poster... no time release. But having said that, I'll mention that although Zithromax IS time release, it is the ONLY time release med that works for me since WLS. Go figure!

I forgot to mention, that I've had good luck with taking "Oil of Oregano" capsules for a cold. I believe that both OoO and Colloidal Silver work like anti biotics. I would always take whatever a doctor recommends! ALWAYS. But if I can't see a doctor, these have worked pretty good for me.

If it is just a cold, which is a viral infection, and not a bacterial infection, an antbiotic will have no effect. Antibiotics do not work on viruses.

I was going to post the same thing that Karen posted. I will add that I would avoid any doctor that pushed antibiotics for a simple cold.

I was just about to post this question the other day. My PCP prescribed Macrobid capsuls for a, lets say, womanly issue, yesterday. I think it's time released, however the pharmacy recommended I open the capsul and pour it into a spoonful of applesauce. So far it's worked (I can tell a difference) and it's not too horrible to take in the applesauce either. ~Anna RNY 1/16/06 - down ~60lbs

You shouldn't take antibiotics for a cold. Colds are viruses and they just need to pass on their own. There is nothing more annoying to a medical provider than a patient demanding aan antibiotic for a viral infection. This is the reason why all theses wonderful somewhat new (aka zithromax) antibiotics lose their efficacy due to resistance. Just drink lots of fluids and let it pass. God forbid you actually need the zmax and it doesn't work in you becuase of resistance.

By cold, I merely meant that if it were respitory as well - and not just viral... hence the need for an antibiotic. I realize that colds don't require an antibiotic, but sometimes they do require more when they turn into more... thanks for the feedback.

Just as an F.Y.I. most respiratory infections, i.e., bronchitis, are also viral. Unless you have an underlying lung disorder or you have been diagnosed with a bacterial infection you really shouldn't take an antibiotic. As it has already been said, too frequent usage of antibiotics will cause you to develop resistance to them, and when you really need them, they won't work.
