Question:
On Average.....How long....

I know this is truely up to your physician and how your body progresses, but on average for most people here, how long was it from immediately post op until you were eating what you would consider "normal" again? Meaning off of liquids, pureed or soft foods and starting to eat regular meals involving portion control and protein intake.    — Jjeaner (posted on February 26, 2006)

I am almost three months post op and can eat normal foods, but very little meat. I can eat 1/2 - 1 cup of food, depending on what it is. Soups are easy, but meat is easy to eat, just hard to digest and it takes very little of it to be too much. I ate about 1/2 cup of seafood chow mein last night with less than a tablespoon of rice.......it took hours to feel okay. I can eat one egg over easy on crisp toast, but not scrambled. I can eat chili with turkey or ground beef and I have had one bite of a cheeseburger......but haven't tried more. Beans are the easiest for me and I rely on refried beans and cheddar cheese with baked tortilla chips for lunches. I am eating approx 1/4 cup beans and 1 oz cheese at a time, usually. I can eat cereal and oatmeal is the best. I can eat salad and some raw vegetables but avoid celery. Overeating is easy with grazing and I try to avoid eating at any time other than meals.

My surgeon has the following plan post-op: 3 weeks full liquids then 3 weeks pureed foods then high protein, low fiber after that.

Hi Julie, I was eating "normal" (so to speak) after 4 weeks, but your new normal is not the same as your old normal and you really need to make wise choices and watch your portions, and as the earlier person commented meats are very hard to eat/digest. I dont eat much meat at all unless it is very very soft, like a stewed beef or chicken that was baked in soup where it is very soft. I do like seafood a lot and can handle salmon and shrimp. I dont eat any white bread, rice or potatoes (all my old favs..) however, I dont miss them either. I havent really had a mental hunger since before the surgery. I basically eat by the clock. I am 4 months out - less 65 pounds and feeling wonderful, Best Wishes, April :)

My Dr requires 2 weeks full liquids, and after the 2 weeks I can eat regular foods. AND I CAN"T WAIT!!! I feel full off the liquidy cream of Chicken soup and mashed pot. I add lots off fat-free milk to make them like liquid. My Dr says "if you have to chew it, don't eat it!" (for the first two weeks that is) My surgery was on thursday Feb.23 I am down 10 lbs. I am drinking liquids (1 oz.) every 15 minutes.

I was on clear liquids only while in the hospital. Then I did a week of semi-soft foods like eggs and SF pudding. I was released of any diet restrictions at one week post-op. I was so lucky to not have to do weeks and weeks of liquid.

I am 4 1/2 years post op. I can tell u to this day that if i eat some types of meat, or even if i endulge in rice too much, and my pouch gets full or over full, sometimes it gets "stuck" and cannot digest, in those few cases i get violently ill and end up driving the porceline bus for sometimes up to 24 hrs or more. But, this is because i have eating disorder problems and on occassion tend to forget how i should eat meats. Especially red meat and chicken. Chicken and turkey have caused me a few nights of pain, thats for sure. However, on a whole, i do not have problems eating just about anything. I can drink diet soda, I can eat almost anything i wish, if i choose to. For some reason, milk does me in, i have become sort of lactose intolerant when it comes to milk, it gives me gas and causes me to rush to the bathroom, so i dont drink alot of milk, but other than that and ice cream (which still to this day makes me dump like crazy) I can eat almost anything i can think of. Resuming normal eating after surgery..... actually took me the better part of a year. Again, though, i have an eating disorder that occassionally gets me into eating mischief that causes my own problems. but i hope this helps. Kim

I was on liquids for 6 weeks, soft for 6 weeks, then started trying to introduce food. I am 14 months post op and still can not eat some things. Beef is a hard one to digest. Or if I eat too many things at one time- like a variety veggies, and meat together I can't digest very well. I can eat veg soup ok......Your tummy will have it's weirdness that is for sure. It is trial and error and a whole lot of pukeing!!!!!!!!!!But so worth it!! Don't forget that as you are hugging that porcelain pony!! CHEW CHEW CHEW- & eat slowly--no kidding.
