Question:
I would like to know if diarrhea is a side effect form WLS

The 1st week or so after I had RNY I had diarrhea...I asked my bariatric coach and she said it was from the stuff they made me drink after surgery to make sure I didn't have any leaks. And now since I'm 2 months and 11 days out, I only get it when I eat a lot of fiber.

I had diarrhea of the worst kind for the first week after surgery. There was NO WARNING that it was going to happen, and I had to clean up more than a couple of messes. But, after I got to start eating soft foods, the diarrhea went away and now I have the opposit problem. I take at least two stool softeners a day, and drink "Smooth Move" tea, and sometimes even take some Phillips MOM in order to have a bowel movement. I'm trying to get in as much fiber every day as I can.... but a whole 25 grams is pretty hard.

I used to think this too before I learned more about the causes of dumping. It's never happened to me yet but I'm not testing to see if I'm part of the 30% or so that do get dumping from sugar, fats, etc. I've experienced the opposite effect after surgery. The first couple of days after surgery I had a few loose stools but it was from the contrast they had me drink in the hospital. My nurse told me so I knew it was a possibility.

I actually had continual diarrhea BEFORE surgery, and now, 7 months out of VSG, it is far less frequent or severe. (Not a conversation I usually have with a stranger, much less a man!) Hope that helps.

I am 10 months post op and still have diarrhea all the time. It is funny to me to see the people who have the opposite problem because I have never had that problem. I don't know what makes the difference between people, but from what I have read, your chances are pretty good that you will go the other way.

It's also logical to think if you are only putting liquids in that liquids are what will come out. Frequently patients on liquid diets like tube feeds will have only loose stools.

I had diarrhea for 4 months post op. My post op meds included Nexium. As soon as I completed the dosage, my diarrhea went away. I am fine now.
