Question:
Having trouble sticking to protien 2 wk pre-op diet, pls help
My lapband is scheduled for 4-28-08. I having problems sticking to this diet. I have made some changes: I have increased my exercise, I am drinking 64 ounces of water, and I have cut back on my portion sizes. The reason I am having trouble sticking to this protien diet is because my cycle is due on 5-1-08. Currently, I am bloated, cramping, my cravings for sweets is out of control. With all this said, my bmi is a 37. My sister who had the band in 1/08, said that she found out that if your bmi is less than 40, the doctor, really just want to to maintain your weight and not gain, pls help! — savoy7658 (posted on April 21, 2008)

Hey there,
I completely understand cravings and having difficulty sticking to the
diet. After all, that is why we have to have the surgery in the first
place right?
If you want the surgery badly enough and want the best outcome- you will
have to stick to the diet with the help of your nutritionist, support
groups, family members, etc. Get all of the sweets out of the house and
distract yourself by keeping busy and identifying your triggers.
Also, eating protein will keep you fuller longer and decrease your cravings
for sweets/carbs. If you eat sweets/carbs, you will crave more and be
hungry again as quickly as 20 minutes.
It is my understanding that a BMI of 35 with co-morbidities (hypertension,
diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, GERD, PCOS, etc) meets criteria for
WLS.
Good luck,

Janice,
My doctor put me on an Optifast liquid diet prior to surgery. The
chocolate flavor with 1/2 frozen banana satisfied my cravings. I could
also drink reduced sugar protein drinks (chocolate flavor for me of
course). Hope this helps!

Janice,
as a recent bander I know what you are going thru. I don't know if your
doctor's office has it but mine has these really great protein shakes that
are very filling and thick. I can get you in touch with them if you want
or you can try the EAS Advantage low carb shakes. They're good. I like
the vanilla ones best. If you need someone to talk to you can always
contact me.
Good Luck!

Please, please, please stick to the 2 week diet. The purpose of this diet
is to shrink your liver enough for surgery. I to was on a 2 week liquid
diet and was to have surgery on 4-4-08 and my doc opened and closed my back
up because my liver was still to big (I did follow the diet). So now I'm
on a 6 week liquid diet with a new surgery date of 5-21. So yes 2 weeks is
sooooo hard but if you really want this surgery give yourself the best
chance at it being a success. You can do this. That food is only going to
taste good for a few minutes, then the guilt will hit. Being healthier
will last you alot longer and it will taste so much better than chocalate
cake. Hang in there and if you need to talk,we're in the same boat.

Hi...no advice on the dieting but my doctor told me the insurance approval
will be based on my weight at the initial visit. I asked specifically if
insurance would be a problem if my bmi went under 40 pre op . They said
no...that was actually a positive and a good sign of commitment.
I can diet my heart out and will be better for surgery if I do.
Ask your doc or call their office to see what they say. I might have a
less tricky insurance company, but find out ( mine is Blue cross..)
I have been detoxing off sugar and carbs and it is starting to get a bit
easier..( about 10 days now. ) I definately have an addiction factor and
physical withdrawal...its a bi--h!
Good luck with your surgery and great results after...HANG in there!

Why did you cut back on portion sizes? Could this be part of the problem?
It's harder (for me at least) to say no to junk food when I'm hungry.
As far as the bloating and cramping, you might want to buy some Midol...
it's specifically meant to treat symptoms of PMS.
Best wishes.

Hi, I know that craving feeling. You may have intestinal yeast which you
would need to be tested for. Yeast thrives on sugars so they are like a
breast within you and make you crave sugar too. In the meantime you could
try taking 5HTP which you can fine at the health food store. Start with
200 mg a day for three days to load your system and then 100 mg twice a
day. They really help me with the sugar cravings. Learn about 5HTP on
line before you buy. Don't just take my word. My Bmi is 57 and my doc
just wants me to maintain but the losing weight before surgery has more to
do with shrinking your liver so that the surgeon will have easier access to
your stomach. Perhaps he examined you and felt a swollen liver which
occurs when we are gaining. You want to help him all you can so the two of
you will be successful together.Good luck.
