Question:
reflux

I haven't had surgery yet,but i do have acid reflux I take nexium everyday and don't have any problems. Readiing these questions and answers I wander if I will have problems if I get the lap band surgery would someone please get back to me Thanks Alice    — alihorn (posted on January 1, 2008)

I had reflux prior to lap band and haven't had any since. I would talk to your surgeon and make sure he knows you have a reflux issue.

I attend RNY support group meetings. I hear many people (including the instructor) who say their acid reflux completely goes away after RNY surgery, without furthur medication. You may want to attend a lap band support group and a RNY support group to discuss your situation.

HI, I'VE HAD ACID REFLUX FOR YEARS, WAS TAKING 2 NEXIUM A DAY BEFORE RNY 11/9/07 AND NOW I JUST TAKE 1 A DAY AND SO FAR HAVE NOT HAD ANY ACID RELUX. WHEN I HAD MY ENDOSCOPY DONE A COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE SURGERY THE DR THAT DID IT TOLD ME I HAD SEVERE ACID REFLUX WHICH I ALREADY KNEW BECAUSE I WAS TAKING 2 NEXIUM A DAY. MY SURGEON WANTS TO ME TO CONTINUE TAKING 1 NEXIUM TO PREVENT REFLUX AND ULCERS. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SURGERY. GOD BLESS, DEBI

I had RNY surgery Nov. 5th 2007. I had a lot of problems with reflux pre-op as well as frequent indigestion from spicy foods etc. Those problems are completely gone and I enjoy foods with no distress at all.

I had terrible acid reflux before banding and have been off all meds since I got my band. If I never lose another pound, it was worth it to get rid of the reflux! Good luck!!

I had reflux and had Gastric bypass and I have no since had any problem since my surgery! :)

Alice, I had the same problem. My reflux was terrible. I had my lap band placed in May. The dr told me that he noticed that I had an esophageal hernia and replaired it while he was in there. I have not had one bout of reflux or heartburn since. It's amazing how it was just gone! Speak with your doctor about it.

I had acid reflux before surgery after a while the doctor did a test and termined that my gallbladder was malfunctioning so he took it out and I'm doing alot better than before.

Well it looks like pretty much of us has answered the question for you. I to had it bad before my surgery. The doctor I have that did my lapband did put me on a chewable refluix pill for the first 6 weeks, but when I had my first fill he stopped it and I do not take anything at all as of now. I am sure you will propably do the same. Good Luck!

Mine went away almost completely. Some have it after a fillm when they never did before, but an unfill & rest usually takes care of that. Donna, Indiana

Same with me! I had the LapBand in 12/06 and have not had any problems with reflux since surgery. I was taking Pepcid before surgery but got off of that afterwards.

I too also have reflux and I take medicine daily for it. After seeing the doctor for my two week checkup after lap band he said that on my next visit which would be a 6 week visit I may be able to come off of my reflux medicine because the surgery actually helps with the acid reflux.

My GERD went away almost immediately after lap band surgery. I have only taken my Nexium twice in the past 1 year and it was early on before the adjustments took place. Good Luck! Patty

Me and a friend of mine both had acid reflux prior to having our band put in. I took medicine everyday. Since I have had surgery both of us have not had trouble with acid reflux. In fact I have not taken any medicine since surgery.
