Question:
Surviving the Pre-op no carb diet....HELP ME PLEASE

I love carbs...its an obsession and unfortunately I haven't found a Carbohydrate Lovers Anonymous Group locally. I'd love tips on how you survived this portion of the Pre-Op procedures. My friends and family are especially concerned for their well being during this portion of the surgery. Thanks!!!    — kchooker (posted on November 26, 2009)

You sound like a Carboholic like me. My best tactic is to completely stay away from carbs and within a couple of days I no longer crave them. I focus on protein instead. I've lost 14 lbs in the past two weeks by doing this and honestly don't feel deprived but I'm also in "my state of mind" right now...that place where I'm focused so that helps too. However, I know that if I dare put the smallest piece of carbs in my mouth, I'll fall off the wagon and be right back to where I started. It's not true that "one little bite won't hurt", it will, at least when you're a carboholic like I am it does.

Wow, I am a carboholic too, but after surgery, I do not even think about them. I know that I will have to watch my carbs for the rest of my life, they aren't our friends.

I had to do a low carb two weeks before surgery.(60 carbs and less) i never realized how much carbs i ate or how much i actually craved carbs.so i knew that was a big problem.so i stuck with it.i did go over afew about twice.but i lost 12 lbs in that two weeks.after a few days i knew not to and i survived.i had surgery july 28th and having little or no carbs don't bother me now.i am 70lbs down.my weakness was homemade baked mac and cheese but i really have not had any problem.you will get through it because you are thinking long term.the results will be all worth it.best wishes to you.

I used lettuce leaves for bread and had tuna salad, egg salad etc on it. Worked ok for the short term needed. I limited my sugar intake by not depreiving myself, but rather rationing myself...only 2 pieces of chocolate etc. IAfter surgery I went four months without chocolate and when I did have some, it was sugar free and I ate one tiny bite about every 3-4 days. An andes candy lasted a week! I hope you find this helpful and find the right trick for you. Relearning to eat isn't easy and I hope you will take the "no hunger" phase after surgery to alter your eating habits and eat for nutrition. I did and it has made all the difference in the world for me! Best of luck and hugs to you! Kim
