Question:
I seen lots of people say Hummus is a good choice for us
I like it, I used to get it at a farmers market where I used to live. BUT I never ate it with out pita chips or crackers. Now that those are pretty much a no-no, what do people eat it with? I am 5 weeks post of, if you can tell me a way to not eat it with a spoon, I'll go buy some now! I can tolerate crackers but I dont want the empty calories. — Kimberlin Katayama (posted on July 22, 2008)

I just bought some hummus yesterday! I eat it with soy crisps...or celery
when I just need to watch my calories...It takes good with cuccumber or
zuchini slices too...but for extra protein go with soy crisps (I like the
sea salt ones with hummus) You can find them near the rice cakes in the
snack section of the grocery store...It tastes good on a sandwich in place
of mayo too. (especially some of the flavored hummus) IF you get plain
hummus you can add things to change the flavor...My fav is to cut up a few
pickled jalapenos and mix those in for a kick ! Taste great! A serving of
soy crisps are 1 oz or 17 (seventeen) crisps and that is quite filling!
many times i can only eat half of that, especially with the hummus! So it's
a great healthy snack and very satisfying.
Here's a link to my fav by Genisoy

Paul Newman has his own brand too...and there are several other
brands...all taste about the same! 8g protein and only 100 calories for 17
soy crisps! NICE!

Hummus is pretty high calorie, generally made with garbanzo beans which of
course have protein. The calories come in with the addition of olive oil
and ground sesame paste. Both of which are healthy but do have lots of
calories. And then there are the pita chips and crackers that you already
mentioned.
With this said, you would be eating such a small amount that in my opinion
is not enough to worry about. When I was at your point in the process and
if I'd eaten hummus, it probably would have been a little bit on 2 or 3
crackers and then I'd be done.
And my nutritionist has said all along that you still need carbs...just not
in abundance. At 5 weeks I couldn't eat enough of anything at one time to
completely kick out something from my diet if it was what I was craving.
Everyone may not agree with this but I think you have to carefully try
different things and see what works for you. I'm about 6 months out and
have lost 85 pounds.
Good luck.

Try Soy Crisp or wheat Crackers....you aren't going to be able to eat
enough that would hurt you and the Hummus is a great source of protein.

I eat hummus all the time. My favorite is Roasted Red Pepper Hummus. I eat
it with Wasa crackers that have protein and high in fiber. With the hummus
and cracker it comes out to 50 calories and I put 2 Tablespoons of hummus
on the cracker. There are only 1g of carbs in the crackers. For lunch I buy
the organic natural peanut butter at Whole Foods and put it on the Wasa
Crackers ( 2 crackers) for breakfast. It fills me and I get some of my
fiber and protein intake for the day.

Cj is right re how much oil is added to the hummus...but you can make your
own so you control the amount of oil is added. It's very simple to make.
1 can of drained chickpeas
1-2 cloves of garlic
salt, pepper and ground cumin to taste
2-3 Tablespoons of tahini (ground sesame paste)
water as needed
Put the first four ingredients in your food processor or blender and let it
run until it's very ground up, diluting with a tablespoon or so of water
until it's smooth and creamy. I sometimes will add only one or two
tablespoons of olive oil just for flavor...but the real deal calls for
nothing but olive oil and tahini to get it to a smooth creamy paste...and
it takes a lot of olive oil to do it. I make it for my husband, who's from
Egypt where they eat this all the time, and he loves it and says it's just
as good as what they eat in Egypt. If you're serving it for guests, you
can put it in a small bowl or plate (double the amount you make if you
want) and rather than adding the olive oil to it while you mix it up, swirl
a little on top and sprinkle w/a tiny bit of paprika.
Even though you need a little carbs...if you want a lower calorie
alternative sometimes, go w/what someone else said...it is a great dip for
raw veggies.
You can also take a piece of roast beef, put a little bit of hummus in it
and roll it up and eat it that way. No bread or crackers involved.

Hommus is fantastic with fresh veggies: broccoli, carrots, celery, etc.

Do you like bell peppers? I am laaaaaazy and I don't like to cook/prepare
food, so I go to Whole Foods once in a while and buy a container of roasted
red pepper hummus and a container of sliced bell peppers. Personally,
that's my favorite way to eat hummus. It's also good with carrots and
broccoli ... I'll eat it on crackers, but honestly I would rather have the
veggies. And if you get the different-colored bell peppers, it's even
better!

I absolutely love baked Tostitos scoops. I can only eat about 10 with
whatever dip I happen to be eating, but then I'm finished. They also have
several grams of protein too.

I like it with blanched (not sure if I spelled that right) veggies.... esp.
broccolli. Chop up your veggies, boil some water, drop them in for a
minute or two, then dump them into a boil of ice water... makes them
sweeter, softer, but keeps the crunch!.
Enjoy.

I don't a surgery date yet, but I'm already experimenting around with soft
foods. I love hummus! Like you, I don't want the carbs by using crackers
as a dip. I started eating 1/4 cup with my eggbeater omellette in the
morning. It adds a tang and some fiber to my meal. Give it a try! I
think you'll like it.
