Question:
Revision from Jejunal Ileal bypass to RNY on 1/9/08, still in pain ?
I am about 7wks out from a open revision of Jejuneal Ileal bypass to RNY. I seem to be doing OK except for two problems. I am having a lot of trouble eating, nothing tastes good and I am still only able to eat only about 1 1/2 Tbs of food TOTAL per meal (even though my stomach is twice the normal size of a reg. RNY). Also for the last 3 weeks I have intestinal cramping every night for about 4 hours. My Dr. has put me on stool softeners which has helped some what but I am still in pain. It seems that my new intestines are having trouble handling "normal" stool. With my previous intestinal bypass I was in a constant state of diarrhea. Does anyone have any suggestions?? — jmccray (posted on February 24, 2008)

I had a RNY on December 5th and I had trouble with eating for about 6
weeks. I had to stay on pureed food for the entire time, and when I went
from liquid to soft solids, I again had trouble eating much. It was
resolved when the doctor gave me a medication to take 1/2 hour before
eating that was for people with ulcers. It was 8 weeks before I could eat
the first solid food, and still today I am limited to about 3 oz per meal.
You might try canned peaches by Del Monte made with Nurtra Sweet. The slip
though the pouch and you can eat more. I also found cottage cheese to be
easier to take, but stay away from rough textured foods for a while. I now
eat about 8 oz per day plus a protein shake and 100 oz of water. For a
while I was able to eat only about 1 oz. per meal 4 times a day. Best of
success. It is worth the effort. Any yes, you will not see diarrhea with
RNY. Stick with the stool softener, as the Iron you are taking make
constipation worse than normal, but you need that Iron.

I have been told by one of my fellow friends in my support group that flax
seed with omega works very well. Just sprinkle it over something you eat,
and it'll make you feel so much better. Goodluck.
