Question:
Is there a way to have a RNY and still take plavix and low dose asprin?
In the process of preparing for surgery I discovered that I had a blocked artery and a stent was put in. I was put on plavix and was told that it was important to take it for a year. I also take low dose asprin and have for several years. My surgeon for the WLS tells me that I am not a good canidate for the lap band because I am not a volume eater. With the lap band I could take the plavix and asprin. With the RNY I will not be able to take either. Do I have other options? I have been unsuccessful with other weight loss programs. Staying where I am does not sound good either. I have sleep apnea, diabetes and chronic muscle pain. Help!!!!!! — Ace (posted on September 19, 2006)

Hi Myra- Don't make this decision hard on yourself. You have a
cardiologist and a WLS surgeon who want the very best for you. Lets do one
of 2 things. Make an appointment with one or the other and be in the
office, and at the same time set up a conference call with the other
specialist to discuss this-while you are present. Be ProActive in your own
medical treatment. With both of them discussing the issue at hand, and you
being there listening, you can ask both of them questions, and hear their
answers. Together the 3 of you can decide what is best for you, and how to
treat your current medical problem, and have the WLS. It is done all the
time, just remember to tell which ever specialist you are going to be in
the office during the call, the reason for the office visit. Don't just
drop the bomb on him/her. they will work with you to the best of their
ability to make sure the end result of your WLS goes smoothly, and the
cardiologist will be able to have a say in the post op care. Good luck,
and dont forget to make that appointment-with both of them. Cindi 3.24.04

I came off my Plavix several days before my surgery. But I had a stroke.
I also have a leaking mitral valve. I am 15 months post op and I am taking
both Plavix and a lose dose apsrin as well with no trouble. But you may
need to get a second opinion. My surgery was the RNY.
Best of luck to you.

Have you researched the Duodenal Switch (DS)? There is no blind stomach,
so you can take NSAIDS, your pyloric valve is still intact, statistically
higher weight loss, longer time without regain, and, probably best of all,
the DS has been done in Europe as a cure for Type II diabetes for 10 years
-- used for even normal weight people (Dr Baltasar, Spain). You can visit
the DS boards and ask your specific question there. There are many
helpful, intelligent people who would love to help you. Good luck and God
bless.

I have had aortic valve replacement and take coumadin(blood thinner) daily.
My cardiologist and wls surgeon didn't seemed concerned. They said they
would just switch me to heparin(different kind of blood thinner) for a few
days before and some time after.Check with your doctors ...all hope is not
lost.

If you only have to take the Plavix for a year, then just have the surgery
after that. Also, consult a cardiologist who is comfortable with the
surgery, as well as getting your sleep apnea taken care of.
I was never a vollume eater, either.

Forgot to say that I used to take an aspirin a day, but no longer do so.
You can't take aspirin if you have the surgery.

My surgeon said that low dose aspirin is ok but to take it with my meals.
You really need to present these questions to your medical professional.
You may need to wait for a short time to see how you fare on your meds
before surgery is considered. I know that this may seem discouraging but
doctor(s) really have your best interests at heart, pun intended. It will
happen, just be patient. Chris
