Question:
Will my surgery be cancelled if I have a cold?

I have a cold and my surgery is on 12/27 if the cold is not gone, will my surgery be rescheduled? Any responses are appreciated. Thanks    — Mz. T. (posted on December 19, 2005)

I had a cold too. I was told as long as there is no upper respiratory infection going on, it was okay. Notify the surgeon's office though. By the time I got out of the hospital and because of all the sleeping, meds, and everything else, my cold was gone anyway. Congrats on your surgery date.

You really don't want to have any surgery with a cold and certainly not with abdominal surgery. It is dangerous and you want to have the least complications after surgery.

I had surgery while having a cold and I was miserable afterward. They wouldn't give me a decongestant in the hospital but they did give me benedryl. It helped a little. Also my pharmicist recommended Zicom if your cold just started. It supposedly helps shorten the life of the cold. I bought some and my wife used it and she says it works. Maybe you could try it. Supposed to use it within the first 48 hours of your symptoms starting by the way.

Call your surgeon. My surgery is in a couple of weeks, but I was given nasal spray and an antibiotic just in case it is an infection I have. As long as you don't have an infection you should be fine.

I think it depends on your doctor. My surgery is set for next Tuesday December 27th. I found my self getting a sinus infection last week. I called my family doc, and because the weather was bad his office was closed. So, then I called my surgeon's office. I spoke with the office manager and told her what was going on. She said that if I was sick my doc would not do surgery. So, he called me in an antibiotic. I am feeling so much better now. Melissa Smtih

I would'nt want surgery if I had a cold! This is a tough surgery. At least the open rny is. And you need to do deep breathing afterwards which I found very difficult. What if you had problems breathing because of a cold and add surgery to it.... you may be looking at alot of fluid in your lungs. Not safe. Better to wait, then to risk it.
