Hi Donna, what kind of surgery are you planning on having? I was given all
the ifo on what to eat and not at my group meeting and again with my Dr
& Nut. Sorry, I know you where looking for a better answer.

First three weeks I had nothing but protien shakes, water, sugarfree jello,
crystal light. After that I went to soft foods, lowfat cottage cheese,
unsweetened applesauce, strained turkey and green beans, etc. Then solids
about a month later, broiled meats, poached or baked chicken, steamed
veggies like brocolli and califlour. Now I can even have a little salad,
and I eat raw mushrooms and celery for snacks. I eat four or five small
meals a day. I drink 60 to 80 ounces of water daily. I exercise 4 to 6
times a week. I avoid white sugar, white potatoes, all breads, refined
grains like white rice and anything that has hydrogenated fats as well as
all fruit juices; yes I am a label reader. I have recently discovered
Qunioa, and learning how to cook it.
I also avoid caffiene and all carbonated beverages. I do drink decaf tea
and occasionally decaf coffee. Is this what you were asking for? Hope I
helped.

For 2 weeks post-op, I was on liquids only...clear liquids the first week,
then other liquids (like protein shakes, either ready-to-drink or powder
mixed with water). Then, at two weeks, I was ready to begin soft foods -
smooth, low-fat yogurt; fat-free cottage cheese; Egg Beaters;
fat-free-sugar-free pudding; and Taco Bell refried beans (but I am NOT a
big fan of beans in any way, shape or form!). Still, though, only an ounce
at a time, 6 times per day - preferrably 6 am, 9 am, 12 pm, 3 pm, 6 pm, and
9 pm. And in between, getting in all the water and liquid protein you can
while still stopping drinking 15 minutes before eating and not beginning to
drink again for at least 30 minutes, generally 45. By week 6, we were
adding in stuff like stewed chicken, cut up very fine, with some of the
liquid to moisten, or soft fish like tilapia, with "I Can't Believe
It's Not Butter Spray" and a little bit of lemon; lemon pepper tuna
from the pouch, made into a salad with a little bit of diced egg and some
dill relish moistened with 1 tablespoon of Best Foods Lite mayo; a one
ounce container of brown rice, a couple of small broccoli florets or some
canned spinach... nothing more than two ounces. You just gradually add
back in high protein foods, staying away from white carbs - no white bread,
no white rice, no white potatoes, no white pasta, no popcorn. If you MUST
have those things, my surgeon and nutritionist told me that they must be
whole grain. I've found a tortilla that is only 50 calories and 7 grams of
fiber, 10 carbs and 5 proteins - it's from La Tortilla Factory. I use it
to wrap around a Hebrew National 97% fat-free hot dog, with a half a
tablespoon of lite mayo and some horseradish mustard and some dill relish.
Yummy, and filling. I am 9 months out right now, and I enjoy going to
Qdoba once in a while and ordering a side of their pulled pork (it's the
leanest thing on the menu) and having a little bit of their 3-cheese queso
poured over the top. It's yummy and high protein. I go out to
restaurants, and have stuff like pistachio encrusted salmon on a bed of
wild rice with sauteed asparagus, and I'll eat a couple of ounces of the
salmon, 2 tablespoons of the wild rice, and 3 of the asparagus spears. I
take the rest home and have dinner for another 3 or 4 days! I go to
Chinese food restaurants, and order their chicken and brocoli, and let my
room-mate have the rice, and I'll just eat the chicken and a few pieces of
brocoli, and once again, take the rest home for lunch or dinner for the
next few days. Another favorite is our sushi night. I can't have the rice
or the seaweed, and only little bits of avocado because of the fat (even
though it's a GOOD fat), but I take my Lite Mayo, and some fat free cream
cheese, and have them chop up a couple of ounces of salmon for me and add a
half a tbsp of the mayo and some microscopically diced lemon peel and lemon
juice, and I'll eat bites of it with just the tip of the baby spoon filled
with fat free cream cheese. I'll also order scallops the same way, and
have them put in a little cilantro with the mayo. They're both chopped so
fine that I eat them with an old fashioned baby spoon (you know, the long,
narrow silver-plate ones that we could buy back in the 70'?). And on some
days, I really crave Mexican food, so I'll save up my fat allowance, and
we'll go out to one of our favorite restaurants where I can order 4 ounces
of the shredded chicken that goes into their burritos, with a side of the
jalapeno cream cheese. We don't really lose out on anything, we just have
to be really careful to substitute whole grains for the white carbs, and to
watch our portions, don't drink during or just after eals, and MOST
important, get the PROTEIN in first!
