proteins

Hi, when you eat your protein first it helps you feel satisfied sooner and
stay satisfied longer as protein sits on your stomach longer. This actually
applies to everyone whether or not you have had any surgery. It is most
important for duodenal switch and rny people because we malabsorb and need
a little more protein per day so we need all our pouch space for protein.
Hope this helps. Kevin

Protein will be the main stay of your diet for the rest of your life - one
you have surgery, your stomach is so small that there is no way you can get
in enough food to get all your nutrition with diet alone. If you don't get
in enough protein, your body starts taking them from the sources in your
body that are made up of protein - hair, nails, muscle, organs. So, you
want to be sure you eat your protein first - then, you can have a little
bit of vegetables and fruit. If your doctor checks your body composition
after surgery on a regular basis, you can determine if you are losing fat
or muscle - if you are losing muscle, you aren't getting enough protein.
And remember, just because you take in 100 grams of protein, it doesn't
mean your body makes use of all that protein. For example, for most
people, your body only actually uses about 80-85% of the protein in fish -
perhaps only 70% of the protein in chicken - and less in other foods. Each
person is different, though, and they may do better with chicken than fish.
I hope this helps answer your question.

Protein first is becuase the protein is the most important element to your
health. After any of the surgeries you don't have as much room in your
"pouch" so put the most important things in first to make sure
you get them down.
