Question:
Drinking

I am just wondering.. I know for a very long time after RNY it is important to obstain from alcohol. I also understand why it is bad because of the empty calories and sugar AND that it is absorbed much quicker than a normal person. I am just wondering if there is anyone out there who is able to have a drink or two socially?    — jtaormina (posted on January 15, 2009)

Julie, I do have a social drink or two once a month - and tonight happens to be the night ;-) A group of neighbors all get together once a month for wine and appetizers. I am a 7 year post op but it STILL hits hard so I never ever drive if I know I'm going to have even one drink.

Three months post op and found I could drink Coronna Beer more easily than water and have no problems with wine, martinis and even the odd shooter or two...I wouldn't recomnend you do it too often as it is hard on the system but about once a month, the girls go out and we have a blast...I don't count my drinks or anything....you'll know when enough is enough....I didn't find it hit me harder...but that's just me....you'll have go guage your own experience....your life is not over....you can still eat and drink....you just have to adjust to your new body and how it works!!!!

Once in a while is ok. Wine is the easiest for me. I'm another once in a great while gal. On occassion. It does hit the system hard so be aware of that. Good Luck and God Bless, vinnigirl, retired RN

I have a drink once in a blue moon; discovered chocolate martinis about 6 months after surgery. OMG. Anyway, I'm a very cheap drunk now! RNY post-ops probably should avoid beer and champagne since it is carbonated and I was told to avoid carbonation. I sure miss Bass Ale!

Hi. I have to admit - I probably drink more than I should after this surgery - but it's because i'm still living it up and single right now. I'm 7 months post gastric bypass - at my goal weight, lost 100 lbs. I stay away from hard liquor - i've been told the sugar and all mixers are too much so I don't drink martinis or mixed drinks. I do have wine most of the time, and light beer. Someone told me we can have only clear liquor (vodka, patron, clear rum) like what diabetics would be able to have because of lower sugar. Don't know if it's true, but I stay away from hard liquor anyway. I do get drunk faster, so I watch out and don't drive. But, it definitely depends on your body and each person reacts differently to it. Some people can't have carbonation anymore, for example - soda. I find that i can have soda if i put a little in a glass and sip it- I can't drink from a can anymore. Other than that, I've been ok with everything. Good luck.

I am 5 months post op. I had a drink for the first time the other day. Be careful......I was drunk after just one drink. I guess it is the size of my stomach now. The effects of the alchol didn't last but about an hour.

At my one month check up, my surgeon told me a glass of wine with dinner would be fine, but to just be careful because of the quick effect it has now. At 2-1/2 months I was on vacation in the islands and on several occassions had a rum drink. Also, I am now about 5 months out, and if we are out to dinner for a special occassion, I will have a drink, but only one!!!

There are plenty of people out there who drink socially after RNY. It is just stupid no matter who you are or what stage of surgery you are at. It is a poor choice and sets yourself up for things you can't see now. It is a temptation you don't want to fall into. Please don't fall into it. Take care. Patricia P.

I didn't drink any alcohol for over a year...I tried sips and it burned too much! But now...I have a glass of wine with dinner on weekends or occassionally....Harder liquor seems to lose it's effect much faster than wine and so I pretty much stay away from liquor unless it's to make a fruity summer drink for fun...and SOME nutrition! LOL I make SF Mojitos with SF grapefruit soda like Fresca, a splash of mango juice, fresh mint and a little rum...It's a nice social and fun party drink ...But I only have one! 2 tops! Wine on the other hand...is my drink of choice and cheap sweet wines will make me dump...I acquired a taste for a less sweet dark red wine for it's antioxidant properties because it offeres NOTHING in nutritional value! LOL But a 4 oz glass of dark red wine is 100 calories and 4 carbs...That's it! No fat...no nothin' Just 100 calories from alcohol! Moderation! Always!

I am almost 6 months post-op and I have a drink on occasion and I find certain alcohols hit harder than others. LIke for instance I have a Martini and my world was shot to all hell. I could walk straight and I was talking a lot. But after about 15 minutes it was over and gone with. Nothing has lingered. I sober up in a short time. It hits hard and fast and is over as quickly.
