Are dry roasted peanuts bad for you if you've had gastric bypass?

I eat them, but I do issue myself a portion size. I don't sit with an open jar!

NO! But....anytime you eat a hight fat food, make sure to measure out one serving. I think that is my biggest success to date...I never sit with an open bag or jar of anything. You know how the bag says "one seving" and you think to yourself..."Yeah, for kids maybe"...Well...One serving is PLENTY after WLS. Get familiar with your measuring cups and measure out one ounce of peanuts...1 ounce is 1/4 C (generally) THen put the jar away and give your tummy time to process the serving size...and you will see it is a perfect amount! Satisfaction guarenteed! :) Oh and CHEW THE those puppies to peanutbutter! Careful if you are newly post op! You do not want to swallow any peanut chunks if you are new!

I eat these as well - often mixed with other types of nuts for variety. I use the snack sized ziploc bags and take a few minutes and measure out 1oz portions and fill bags for the week. Quick healthy snack on the go!

If you've just had surgery recently, then NO! If it's been a while (you're not in your "special foods" phases any longer, then YES, it's OK. Like anything else decadent, take it easy! Enjoy a handful occasionally but just ONE handful and just OCCASIONALLY. Chew thououghly too.

It depends. If you are NOT on thyroid medicine, then the answers already posted apply. Peanuts and other nuts can be an excellence source of nutrition/protein for you. For example, 2 brazil nuts will provide you all the selinium you need daily, if you are slacking off of getting sufficient protein drinks in your diet. Selinium is a regular ingredient in quality protein drinks, such as Isopure. Yes, you can get your protein from other sources but getting the right amount of selinium can be a real challenge. At least that is what I have experienced. So, eating 2 brazil nuts on those days, will provide your body all the selinium you need. I just recently learned that peanuts and peanut butter is bad for me because I am on a high dosage of synthroid for my sluggish thyroid. Eating them doesn't help my thyroid at all and contributes to my weakened and sluggish metabolism. I dropped all offending foods about 2 months ago from my diet with the exception of soy lecithin, which is also an offending food, and my metabolism is now really reved up and doing ever so much better. If you ARE on thyroid medicine, then peanuts and peanut butter are bad for your thyroid, causing your metabolism to be even more sluggish. Speaking to the issue of nuts and fats, I regularly have 1/4 cup of nuts daily. Hope these answers help you make an informed decision.

I routinely enjoy nuts, I have had LapBand, not RNY. When I have lots of restriction, I have to be VERY carefull and chew them to pulp before swallowing or they will aggravate my stoma. I agree with the other authors about portion control. If you are a nut person like me or a snacker, you may eat much more than you intended. Enjoy in moderation if you are far enough out from surgery! Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC
