Question:
Can I have surgery if on my period?
It looks like I might be starting my period just before or on the same day as my surgery. Do they ever give you birth control pills to stop this ? — KACJDC (posted on February 19, 2008)

Having your period during your surgery will cause no problems for the
doctor, just will be inconvient for you. The nursing staff is use to this
happening so they should be able to help you. You might want to take some
heavy duty pads with you because you won't be able to use tampons. One
good thing is, if you normally get cramps with your period all the pain
meds you will get after surgery will take care of them. Not sure if taking
birth control pills to stop it will work.
Good luck on you up coming surgery......

Someone answered this on another group and their Dr. said they aren't
working in that area LOL. So you should be fine. Kim

I was told to stop taking BC one month prior to surgery because it makes
you more prone to blood clots. Please consult your surgeon and GYN. It's
better to be safe than sorry. If it's all good with your surgeon--then just
be prepared with the pads and such and you should be fine. Good luck and
you'll be in my prayers.

I've heard that many women start their periods after surgery regardless
because of the stress it is on their body...I did get mine which was not
due at all and it was not a big deal...Surgeons have seen blood before;)
Bring pads! I was only in surgery two hours and I got it soon after I was
awake and aware.

starting your period is no problem for the surgeon, but like the others
have said it will make it inconvient for you. i continued taking my pills
right up to my surgery and directly afterwards, because my surgeon stresses
the importance of birth control!! make sure you take some heavy pads, extra
undies, and maybe some baby wipes for your convience just incase you do
start. good luck and i'm sure you will do fine, hope this helps...Holly

Hey,
Mine started the day before surgery and I just let the nurses know when I
got to the hospital, it is no big deal...just dont wear a tampon there.
Bring your own supplies (no tampons)just in case, makes things much more
comfortable.
It is no biggie, just relax and enjoy the ride. Good luck and I can't wait
to welcome you to the losing side.

I had my Period during surgery, the Nurse had me put a tampon in right
before surgery, so that I wouldn't have to worry about a mess and I had no
problems. Just make sure your nurse and doctor know. My Iron levels were
really low and they belived that it was due me losing blood during surgery
in combination with with my peroid. we fixed that with an iron supplment.
Just talk to your doctor and nurse, they will tell you what they want you
to do.

Girl the morning of your surgery put on a maxi pad and when you change for
surgery -- put on a fresh one and let the doctor do his thang. You will be
find. I was in the middle of mine when my surgery date rolled around --
shoot they will even provide you with pads.

There is no medical reason why you can't have surgery while on your
period.
Birth control pills do increase the risk of blood clots so if you aren't
already on it, I doubt they would put you on it to stop a period (plus I
think you'd probably be done bleeding by the time the birth control pills
kicked in).
As others have said, let your surgeon/nurse know and you should be fine.
Good luck!

It seems like the other posters have already got this covered, but the
nurses who will oversee your procedure have seen it all. If your cycle
does begin, they may supply you with a hospital pad (to lie on) if you
cannot wear underwear during the surgery. Good luck!
