Question:
birth control question
I've had my first shot of depo and am going off it --its AWFUL! I haven't stopped bleeding for 6 weeks, but I was wondering what has worked for other people? Is the patch a hassle? Do people really have successs using the pill? My doctor didn't suggest it, but I know other doctors say its okay...just wondering what other things work for other people. — wecangetright (posted on June 1, 2007)

You may want to try the NuvaRing. I type OB/GYN work as a medical
transcriptionist and this is a very popular choice these days with girls
who just don't think they could remember pills or really don't want to
hassle of it. I also know that they now have a chewable birth control pill
that you can take. The same reaction that you had to the shot is pretty
much what happens to most across the board. There are not very many people
who are successful with the shot. I myself do not take birth control pills
because I ended up having gallbladder attacks from them once a month. If I
were to go back on them I would probably want to take Seasonale myself.
The main reason being that I have very heavy periods and you have a
withdrawal bleed from these once every 13 weeks (four times a year). Many
doctors are also willing to let you take regular pills like Ortho
Tri-Cyclen this way, but I am not sure if there is a difference in the
chemical makeup that would make it less effective or not. Hope this helps.
At least I have given you some additional options.

I'm on the depo shot now. I havent had any problems with it, but I have
heard alot of people that has had problems. Im thinking about getting on
the patch by the end of the year. The patch you just change once a week.
My doctor had good things to say about the patch.

i've had depo for YEARS, it was a bit rough the first two shots, but worth
it as the side effects of no period were worth it to me. I've heard good
things about the patch - good luck.

I have talked to many that have had no problem with the pill after RNY
surgery. I was taking the pill successfully for quite a long time prior to
my surgery, so I am going to go back on it this Sunday (I'm a little over 2
months post op). One major advantage of taking the pill is it reduces the
risk of ovarian cancer. It also takes care of any adult acne. We already
have to take our vitamins every single day for the rest of our lives, why
not take it with those? I've never had a problem remembering to take the
pill. For all the other posters, WARNING ABOUT THE PATCH. You might want
to check out how many law suits are pending against the patch!!! You might
pass out from how many there are! The doctors are saying "take the
pill everyday at the EXACT same time...." You don't need to take it
at the "exact" same time, I was always within a couple hours for
over 5 years and NEVER had a problem. Just remember with the pill that
natural herbs and some antibiotics will alter the effectivness of the pill.
ALWAYS make sure your doctor knows your on the pill when he prescribes new
meds. Good luck!

I went with the non harmonal IUD. So far so good. I am 6 months out RnY
and have had normal regular periods. They do have one that has a slow
harmone release, but I have a family history of breast and uterine cancers,
so non harmonal was the best choice for me.
Good luck to you!

I have been on the NuvaRing since before my surgery and I love it. So far I
haven't had any problems and it's been a few years. Everyone is different
but you could ask your doctor about that. In the meantime there is a lot of
information online about it. Best wishes for health and happiness always.

My doctor put me on seasonale....you only get 4 periods a year!!! Have had
no weight gain and have been on it for almost 2 years. The first 90 days
you will have some break thru, but not after that unless you forget. Hope
this helps, happy losing, Brooke

katie, i'm wondering how far post-op you are? just a thought for you: if
you are only a few weeks or months post-op, the bleeding may be coming from
your body's reaction to losing the weight. estrogen is stored in fat cells
and when you lose the weight so fast it can make your periods out of wack
for the first couple months. the depo shot does have that side effect for
alot of people, but if you are not a pill taker you may want to hang in
there for one more shot, because alot of times it will get better after the
second shot and normalize. i personally have been on the pill for years and
my surgeon that is gonna do my bypass says the same pill will be fine for
me to take afterwards. good luck, there are many options out there just do
some research and decide what is best for you.

I HATED the depo shot--stayed on it for a full year, hoping it would get
better. I was an emotional wreck from the hormones, and I ended up gaining
30 pounds on it! I was ravenous the entire time I was taking it, and
nothing helped to supress my appetite--so frustrating! Now I'm on the
NuvaRing, and I'm very happy with it. It's easy, it's comfortable, and it
works for a full month. My periods are back to normal, I'm not a raging
loonie, and I'm losing that excess weight I gained. Oh, and I'm not
pregnant! =)

I'm on mirena, its an IUD. I am 21 years old and i do not have any children
(some dr's want you to at least have had one child prior to insertion so
that its easier to put in and less likely to expell) I've had it since
March of this year, so far no problems... May also shorten, lighten or even
eliminate your periods altogether. It can protect you up to five years...
but if you want to get pregnant lets say in two years you just have it
removed (either do it yourself or have ur dr do it) it takes 6 months for
it to settle in. the first two months i was on mirena i had my period for
10 days, each month. Now my period is almost non-existant .... for more
information you can go to the site http://www.mirena.com/html/index.html
good luck to whatever you choose!
