Question:
I suffer from migraines & was wondering what other people do.

I have bad migraines which I used to Excedrin Migrain for, but I had the lap band surgery on 11/7 and the PA told me that I can no longer take it. I have not been back to my PCP to see what other options I have.(Imitrex does not work for me) Please if anyone else suffers from this problem & has a suggestion let me know. Thank You, Veronika    — Veronika (posted on December 6, 2006)

not sure if the lap band is different from the Rou-en-y in the way of medications but i'm only allowed tylenol products. see if there is something tylenol makes that would help.

I also suffer from bad migraines however I have only had 2 since my RNY on 1/19. Tylenol is the only thing I can take now.

I too have disabling migraines that Excedrin was my best buddy for. Imatrix works for my daughters headaches, but not mine; my miracle was Maxalt; Maxalt MLT melts on your tongue and the headache is gone in about 90 minutes-- my sister and I have been using it for years, and I was so relieved that it was okay to use after surgery! of course with the melt tab it is extra good, no worrying about swallowing something to irritate. Good luck! Vanessa

I also use Maxalt. It is a wonderful product and works better for me than Imitrex.

hi there. I get bad migraines. I would suggest you see a neurologist as they have many more options than your PCP. I take nortriptylene daily to keep them away and if I get a breakthrough migraine I take axert. I used to take another med (prescription) but had to stop that after my WLS last year. Good luck!!!

Veronika: You might try Excedrin Tension Headache; it is acetaminophen (tylenol) with caffeine. Also, there are many other triptan migraine meds that you could try, Imitrex is only one of many. Relpax and Amerge have worked for me.

I have had migranes since I was 16 (now 37) and have been on Imitrex, Topamax and Relpax as well as all the over the counter meds. Since my RNY last December the intensity of my migranes has gone down. I asked my neurologist and my surgeon and both said the Relpax and the Imitrex were fine. Imitrex has injectable, and nasal spray forms as well as the pills. Have you tried the other forms of Imitrex - one might be more effective for you than the pills. On the pill side I find Relpax very effective.

I had my surgery on 11/6/06. I used to be taken from public places by ambulance because the pain(migraine) was so severe. I have only had one MILD headache since my surgery. At the very onset of my headache, I took Relpax and it did the trick. The internal medicine doctor that saw me during my hospital stay assured me that the headaches would Decrease after surgery..and Thank God, they have.

Veronica, i too have had migraines for years. Most of the meds do not work for me except for Midrin.. which my Dr just put me back on. But I am also a massage therapist and massage has done wonders for me to relieve the tension in the muscles that can help cause migraines. One trick that helps myself and a lot of my clients that suffer with migraines is to put an ice pac.. or one of those hot/ cold pacs that have been frozen.. on the back of your neck, this helps to decrease the size of the blood vessels.. and therefore take away some of the pain. It may not take away all of the pain from a migraine, but it makes things bearable. If you ever have any questions for me.. feel free to email me and I will help the best that I can.

i also have lots of tension headaches with migraines too and they greatly effect my life in a negative way. tylenol doesn't work for me at all. i take ibuprofen 800mg every 4 hrs , use cold packs on my forehead and back of neck, when i can get someone to massage my neck and shoulders it works wonders, and bath and body works makes a headache relief cream (aromatherapy remedies with peppermint essential oils) that is awesome! i use it on my temples under my nose and on my neck. sometimes if the ibuprofen doesnt work i take excedrin and it sometimes works. i have even had times when i blacked out and had to go to the ed from all the pain. i have been on multiple prescriptions that didn't work so i am hoping and praying that my surgery will help decrease the incidence of headaches. hope this info. helps holly

There are a lot of options for you. You can try various over the counter medications, you could also try "Head On" or other topical medications meant to be rubbed on the head or temples. There is also a cold/hot patch geared towards migraine suffers. You said Imitrex doesn't work for you, have you tried all 3 forms? The highest Imitrex dose in a pill does nothing for me. Neither does the nasal spray. The injectible imitrex relieves my headache before the entire dose is injected into my skin. Pretty amazing. Maxalt is another option... same family, I believe, as imitrex. You could try something prophalatic... I used to take Depakote daily as a preventative. I've heard of various ant-seizure meds being used as well as some anti-depressants. Fioricet works differently than Imitrex/Maxalt.... some combo of OTC pain reliever plus barbituate and maybe caffeine-not real sure but it helps. Migranol (Migrainol) is an ergotamine based medication (I think) used to treat migraines... I've used the nasal spray. Works ok but if I'm nauseated, its hard for me to tolerate nasal sprays. You've definitely got a lot more options. I'd reccomend checking it out with your PCP. Hope some of this is helpful. Best.
