Question:
3 mnths post-op, and can barely eat food that stays down

I am now 3 mnths postop, and have lost 28.5 pounds. I had the adjustment twice, before I finally felt restriction. My problem is, that I can't really eat anything. I am mainly sticking to a liquid diet, becasue thats basically the only thing that stays down. I cant eat chicken or eggs. The only fish that works sometimes is, when I buy ready made tuna salad, it goes down-but only sometimes. I drink about 1 can of slim fast a day. I don't know what else to eat. The weird thing is, even though I barely eat, I am losing at a snails pace. Does anyone have any ideas for me? Thanx    — bklynnyusa (posted on August 23, 2006)

Faige, what does you surgeon or his/her after care professionals say? You most certainly need more protein to help facilitate the losing plus more water. I would try BariatricEating.com for samples of different proteins. They have less fat then slim fast. I use the AnyWhey; 1/2 scoop in Green Tea (decaf) every morning. I do two cups in morning and two in the evening. And then I like Matrix Chocolate. I also use slim fast somtimes. I try to get 90 grams of protein in a day this is based on my desired goal weight of 141.

Well, first of all are you taking small bites and chewing each bite 20 times because i had this problem also and that I think was my biggest problem not chewing the food good enough. Slim fast I really don't think that is a very good choice there is alot of sugar in slim fast shakes check the ingredents. ANd you don't want sugarmaybe that is the reason of the slow weight loss. I went to GNC they have a liquid protien I mixed it with crystal light I liked the orange flavor the best and it was a great drink. Also gee I am trying to remember but I wold say that at 3 months out I was eating about 1/2 self serve cottage cheese at a meal. I had my surgery 4/7/05 and have lost 103 lbs. and feel great... If you have any questions feel free to contact me... Good luck...Cindy

I am 7 months post op from a banding and I still have trouble regulating my diet. I CAN NOT eat any meat, no matter how much I chew. I CAN NOT eat bread. I can eat fish, but it has to be cooked correctly, if it is over cooked, it is just like eating meat. I stick to crabmeat and scallops. I can not eat scrambled eggs, but I can eat poached eggs. I have learned that I MUST eat uninterrupted. When I eat, I have to concentrate on what I am eating and make sure I am concentrating on chewing. If I am eating lunch at work and talking and joking with people and not paying attention to my chewing, I end up getting sick. Same thing when I am eating out, I have to concentrate on chewing. I too, am losing at a snails pace. My blood work showed malnutrition, I was told to significantly increase my daily protein intake, which I have done. I still am not losing weight, I do not yet know if the malnutrition has improved. I go back to the doctor on September 12th. Your not the only one with this problem. Contact your doctor's office and speak with the nutritionist.

It sounds like you have had the band type surgery. You did not say, but, from what I read you might have been adjusted too tight. Call your Doctor & let hime know you are having this much trouble. It should be better at 3 months out. Make sure you are chewing you food very well & buy whey protein to get your protein into your body. Champion is the best tasting & easy to mix stuff out there. You weight loss if fine, Don't give up. When did you every lose 30 lbs in e months. Call your Doc's office, it will get better.

Sounds like you are too tight. You should be able to eat most foods in small quantities. Bandsters are not meant to be on liquid diets as that goes right through the band and does not keep us satisfied. I suggest you call your doc and talk about an adjustment.

YOU HAD THE LAP BANDING - the average weight loss is only about 2-3 pounds per week, not like the Gastric Bypass RNY where we lose much faster. As I see it 28.5 pounds is greater than average. Your right on track. Even moreso before with the Lap Band in the beginning your lucky if you've only lost more than a pound a week. Don't get frustrated, you'll take a little longer but it's coming off. You'll see the difference in your cloths and feel it before seeing it on the scales. Keep moving them buns.

Faige, You'd be better going to the Lap Banding Forum with any questions in your regards. William the Lap Band is no where close to your procedure the VBG (Vertical Banded Gastroplasty). Talk with a Nutritionist that deals with your procedure too.

I, too, felt like I was losing too slowly. I was told it was probably because I was considered a "lightweight". I was 258 pounds and I'm 5'4". As far as the food intake, I'm sorry but I would not be of any help for that since I had the RNY. Good luck though.. Keep your chin up!!!

I was the same way. I had to drink protein drink (yuck) to lose weight and stay healthy, but had trouble keeping it down. I also could not eat for a long time. When I did finally eat solid food, I found that I had to wait at least an hour after eating to drink and at least a half hour after drinking to eat, or I got sick. I still cannot eat chicken or eggs, and I am 19 months out. I did find that shrimp went down pretty well, as well as lobster salad. they seem expensive, but 1/4 pound lasted me all week. LOL. Eat your protein first. And try to drink your water. That will help you lose.

It is very important to find a nutritional meal replacement shake, your body needs protein and nutritional value... You will need t o contact your doctor concerning your problem too... I went through this as well...when we rob our body of food (fuel) we will tend to slack off the weight and start storing, our body needs to eat to burn...There is a huge difference of losing weight in pounds and losing body fat... You never want to lose muscle, muscle weighs more than fat and you can look thin but still have a high body fat %. I weight 129 and have maintained that for 10 months going up maybe 2 or 3 pounds but I take a concept of never letting myself get out of hand. I love being healthy, hope this helps! Celeste Momin 327 to 125, 16% body fat of healthy weight!
