Question:
P.O. 2 1/2 weeks gastric bypass. I just ate Wendys chili 12oz. HELP

I am having a hard time only eating the 4oz that the doctor told me. I am never satified. Yesterday I wrote everything done, I had one egg with chesse for breakfast, 8oz protein shake mid morning, 4oz tuna with light mayo for lunch, light yoguart for mid afternoon, 1/4 cottage chesse 1hour after the yoguart, 4oz chicken & 2oz green beans for dinner. I had 48+oz of water. And I am not full. Today I had the same breakfast and for lunch i had the chili-for the first time I feel full. How could I be eating this much? Can my pouch be bigger then others? And I am not losing much either. Had surgery on Feb 28th down 22lbs. as of March 11th. nothing lost since.    — pete (posted on March 17, 2006)

Peter, did your doctor tell you what size of pouch was created for you? I would imagine it would be 4oz since that is what you were instructed to eat. Keep in mind that soft foods or liquids will squeeze out thru the stoma into your intestines allowing you to eat more. Are you supposed to be eating things like chili, chicken and tuna this early out? I know I was still on full liquids or pureed foods at 2.5 weeks out. Do not drink when eating, solid foods will stay in your pouch longer allowing you to feel full longer. I too was given a 4oz pouch, it's larger than most, but still effective....if you play by the rules. Good luck, don't stress, and ALWAYS talk to your surgeon about your concerns.

Its very hard to give you a definitive answer, because there are a many surgeons and Nuts as there are eating protocols. I am amazed though, at so early out you are able to eat these things, but if you are following your surgeons protocol to the letter, then that a good thing. I was on full lilquids 3weeks post op, pureed foods the next 3 weeks, and soft foods the following 3 weeks, then onto more regular foods after that. i have never heard, ever, a surgeon or Nut advise their patients to eat until fulll, because most post ops never feel full, but we are advised to eat until satisfied only. During my first weeks post, up until 6 months post op, everything was measured out at 1/4 cup or 2 ounces. From 6 months on, I am only allowed half a cup of food each meal, only 3 times a day. I dont think I have ever eaten 12oz of food, except for protein drinks. Like I mentioned, if you are following your protocol and not adding what you want to it, rather what is there, then you are doing ok,. Good Luck Cindi -219#

http://www.aspiruslibrary.org/patient_ed/pdf/cns/pe-cns-022.pdf Here is a good web address that i have gotten alot of information on different phases of dieting after the bypass surgery. Although i am pre-op and still getting ready for my surgery 4/5. I found this site to be helpful as far as amounts per different phases of eating after the surgery as well as types of food that are good for us as far as proteins. Good Luck~and don't give up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Peter, I think you better at utmost speed talk to your dietican. You are having a serious problem. Your pouch is the size of a large egg. you need to start drinking more also.

Although everyone is different, you really need to speak to your health care provider about your diet and not feeling satisfied, full is not necessarily the goal. It is also important for you to contact & talk with your support group friends. Keeping focused really helps. You did not go through what you went through for nothing. I don't know about others but I still have days that I can eat more and days that I eat less. It just depends. In any case, take care and allowing the healing process to take effect.

Peter are you drinking with your meals and how long are you eating per meal? By drinking with meals and say eating for a hour, you can eat a lot more.. please tell us more!

I emailed some encouragement but would also like to reinforce what you may have already been told. Drinking too close to meals and soon after "washes" your solids through too quickly. Try to refrain from drinking anything 1/2 hr before or after meals and see if that doesn't help you feel satisfied longer. I was also instructed by the dietician to focus on dairy and protein and eliminate veggies for the 1st 6mos. I'm surprised you can tolerate such 'heavy' foods this soon post op!!

how much weight did you THINK you'd loose; considering your start point 22 pounds is way within normal limits. As far as your 'eating' it might not be nothing and be normal - if you had the RNY it could be a problem - it certainly was in my case and is aways possible for anyone having surgery. I would check to see what size your surgeon did you' and if its was like your peers - then I would discuss with him the volume you are eating since it could be you have a failed stoma. If thats the case; you need to start limiting what you eat regardless of how you feel (full or not) in order to continue the weight loss portion of your journey.

Hi there --- I am amazed that you can (or even want to) eat solid foods, especially chili at almost 3 weeks post-op. I couldn't even get through a couple of ounces of clear liquids or pureed foods for quite some time. To this day, I cannot eat more than 4-6 oz at a time and I am 3 years post-op (3/3/03) and have lost 135#. As a patient and being an RN, I don't honestly believe any Doctor or Nutritionist would approve of any solid foods at this stage due to the healing that is of UTMOST umportance to make this surgery to be as successful as we all need and want. We all went through alot to get here and it is SO very worth it. PLease rethink your dietary allowances and of course, please consult your MD an/or your Nutritionist for assistance. I know we as your peers are here for support and "mild" guidance, but for your actual post-op concerns--SEE YOUR MD !!!! Take it slow, easy, and patiently-- IT IS WORTH IT !!!!!! Kera (250-->115)

I too am AMAZED you can eat that much so soon. I know my pouch is approx 1-2 ounces. I had to cut my pureed portions to 1/4 cup or suffer from extreme feelings of bloating and fullness. I also agree you should call your doc and/or dietician ASAP-- it is possible some of your stitches opened up and food is going down into your lower stomach. Good luck.

OK the problem is your head is telling you that you are hungry you have lost your best friend (food). You need to measure your food and don't eat anymore then what you measured. At 2 weeks post op I was eating 1/4 of a self serve cottage cheese per meal. My daughter who also had the GB told me mom you are not hungry you just think you are and I thought she was nuts but now i look back almost a yr. out and she was completley right. Good luck and if you would like to talk more please write me....

Peter, I was removed from any special diet at 1 wk post-op. I never had the strict liquid, puree, etc phases that many others do. Every Dr is different so please don't let it concern you that so many are 'shocked' that you can eat that so soon. My first 'meal' was one week post-op and it was 1/4 of a chicken salad sandwich on toast. Also, I think that 22 lbs in 11 days is fabulous. I lost 28 lbs in my first month so you seem right on track to me. If you are concerned about your lack of fullness, speak with your Dr. As a new pre-op, I didn't truly understand "full" until I overate and got sick. It is something that is hard to get used to. Head hunger is an evil thing to overcome. Best of luck.
