Question:
Can you help me with a list of drugs OTC that Post Op's can no longer take after surg
I would like to know from all of you Post Op's what OVER THE COUNTER MED's you have been told you are no longer albe to take. Like (asprin) and if you know the reason why you were told NOT to take the pills. ALL your help on this would be GREATLY appreciated. My doctor did not give me a list of what meds not to take. I called him
because I had my open RNY two weeks ago and am still having some internal
pain at the site of my pouch, especially when I eat. He told me I could
take tagamet, pepsid, or maalox. I tried a little maalox and it helped.
At a pre-op visit, I asked him if I could remain on baby aspirin therapy
and he said yes. I take thyroid medication and zoloft. I take tylenol for
pain. I tried Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) once but I think it is too early
after surgery to use those products.

I had the BPD/DS, and my surgeon has not restricted me from using any OTCs.
I think the reason some surgeons place restrictions on OTCs is because the
pouch procedures are more vulnerable to ulceration, and some medications
(especially OTC pain killers) can contribute to that. Peace!

I had RnY and my surgeon said I should not take Motrin/Ibuprofen,
Aspirin/Salicylate, Pepto-Bismol (it's a salicylate), Aleve/Naproxen
Sodium, Excedrin/Excedrin Migraine, or Non-steroidal anti-inflamatory
drugs. All of these drugs can irritate the stomach pouch or contribute to
ulcers.

This suprises me, I was not advised of any restrictions regarding
prescription or over the counter medications. I have taken medication as
needed depending on my ailment and have not had any difficulties thus far.
I had RNY 6-14-99.

I think some doctors caution use of some OTC's because of
irritation/bleeding issues while you are still healing post-op. I do know
that some VBG surgeons tell there patients to stay away from "pill
form" meds after surgery because of the risk of blockage around the
band.

Hi Dana
I was told no ibuprofin (advil, motrin) or aspirin. Can cause ulcers.
