Question:
No weight loss for two weeks
I am just 6 weeks posop from VSG and am down 21 lbs. thus far. Am still mainly drinking Atkins Shakes, Isopur, Kellog's Protein Water and eating just tiny meals. I seriously doubt that I am getting more than 800-900 calories per day and am hungry a lot of the time so am very distressed about the lack of weight loss for the past two weeks. Am already freaking out because I am 100 lbs. overweight and will be happy with just a 70 lb goal but keep thinking that I will not reach this before my body just stops losing. Any suggestions. This is way to early to get discouraged but I am feeling that way. When I do eat it is still not setting very well either but I just want something to chew occasionally instead of always drinking. — bonyoho (posted on February 28, 2009)

Hey, try to be more positive. I know its hard sometimes but there is
always hope! I was 355 before surgery. I am now 174. My surgery was in
June 07. It just takes time, try and be patient. When I feel the urge to
chew I chew sugarless gum. In small amount, almonds are a great chew and
high in protein, but also fat, so not too many. Hang in there and it will
happen if you just stick with it and follow the program.

Hang in there you are doing great! I hit a plateau 10 days after RNY where
I didnt lose any weight for 3 weeks. I was so upset. I visited my DR and
he told me it was normal and it was just my body trying to get used to all
of the changes and he promised me the plateau wouldnt last forever. It
lasted about 3 weeks then suddenly one day I started losing again. I have
hit several plateus since that time so this too shall pass. I had the same
worries and fears you have. Stay positive and keep doing what you are
supposed to and I promise you will lose!

It's possible that you're not eating enough calories. I noticed that when
I eat less than 1,000 calories per day (I'm 260# now but started at 300) I
lose more slowly. Also, what types of solid food are you eating? Do you
have a nutritionist to speak with at your surgeon's office? I've found
that canned or pouch salmon goes down well and is very good for you. For
the first 3 weeks or so after I went back on solid food I also had a
slightly upset stomach when I ate, but it went away after a week or two.
Did you do the 3 stages of re-eating that is recommended before
"digging" into solid food? Your stomach needs time to adjust to
solids again.
Hope this helped...

We all go through plateaus - I had the VSG on September 5 and have had 3
plateau periods - the first one was after about 3 weeks and lasted a couple
weeks. This last one has last about 3 weeks, so I am hoping it is at an
end. I have found that even when I'm not showing lbs lost on the scale, I
am losing inches. I take measurements at least every 2 weeks. Also, look
at your other non-scale victories - such as fitting into a small size
clothes, or being able to walk a little further without getting out of
breath, etc. Plateaus happen to everyone - it is our bodies way of dealing
with all the changes. I lost about 20 lbs the first month - since then it
has slowed down to about 12 lbs a month - except this past month I have
only lost about 6 lbs due to the plateau. Also, it is important to try and
get in at least 8 cups of water a day and the exercise is paramount to
increasing your metabolism so you continue to lose weight. You'll do
great! Just don't use the scale as the only means to measure your success!
It's hard, I know. Hang in there!

When is your surgeon/nut telling you to switch to soft foods? I had a VSG
in September, and when I let go of the protien shakes and went to all soft
high protien foods like scrambled eggs and moist roasted chicken breast
(Hormels), and ramped up the exercise, (Walking with Leslie Sansone), I
stated losing at a healthy rate of 2 pounds or so a week.

Hey Bonnie... congrats on your surgery. Congrats on your weight loss...
keep positive... when was the last time that you lost 21lbs in 6wks?
Having said that... anytime you hit a plateau, and you will, closely
examine if you are using your tool properly... are you eating ALL that you
are supposed to? Are you exercising? Are you getting all of your water in?
All of these can affect weight loss. If you have a serious plateau that
lasts more than a month, get with your surgeon, or their dietician and the
first thing that they will make you do is keep an ACCURATE food/activity
diary for at least a week. Sometimes, it is that you are not eating
enough.. which is so foreign to most of us in thinking about weight loss.
So be patient with yourself, if you find that you are getting all of your
calories and nutrition, fluids, and exercise in, have faith, the weight
will start dropping off again. The problem with the "newbies" as
I term all the newly post op is that it is all new... you don't have the
hindsight yet that will allow you to have the faith to know that if your do
what you are supposed to the weight WILL come off. Keep busy. You may
find soon, if you haven't already, that you will "moarn" your old
eating habits... this is normal, but remember where they got you. You are
still in the beginning stages and your body is still healing. I lost about
140lbs. The first 80-90lbs came off in the first year. Some people will
say "that was too slow for me" but I preferred it to come off a
little slower. I think that I got better skin retraction because of it.
I am 2 1/2 years out and still would like to get another 20lbs off, but I
have faith that I keep using my "tool" as it was designed and it
will come off. I still have to stop and re-examine. Good luck to you and
congrats on your decision for becoming a healthier you... Kari
