Question:
2 weeks liquid diet
just wanted to know did everyone do a full 2 weeks liquid diet and did you do all 14 days on the liquid diet or did you mess up some days and if so did you still go ahead with the surgery or did you have to wait on surgery, how did you all get through the 2 weeks liquid diet? — mike250 (posted on January 2, 2009)

I did all 14 days on the liquid diet. I was pretty sick of it, and
frustrated, I felt like I was starving. I hung in there, because I didn't
want to dissapoint my self or my Doctor. It isn't easy but it can be
done. I just kept reminding myself of the reason I was doing it. Hope
this helps.

I did it for 17 days. I felt it was a good test to see if I was going to
follow the "rules" after wls. It was tough at times, but I wanted
to prove to myself I could do it so I just kept right on with the liquids.
It was worth it.

I had to do it 16 days and just keep reminding myself it's all going to be
worth it. I did not cheat at all and I am so thankful for that. I lost
about 25 pounds on the liquid diet and I am sure that helped the doctor get
to my stomach to do the surgery. I am now almost 6 months out and 82 pounds
lighter. I wish you the best of luck, you can do it!!!

I did it for 7 days only.... I am not a very patient person and needed to
do more. My first anything was 3 soft scrambled eggs. That went well so I
progressed.... I basically am 2 weeks out of surgery and on my 4th week
meal plan. I still keep protein high and calorie count low. I have
tolerated everything well. Since everyone is different I can't tell you
what to do, but it worked for me. Last night I had a piece of broiled
Salmon.

I did a full 14 day liquid diet, the key is to constantly drink something
so that you never get that "I'm starving to death" feeling. It
is difficult, but well worth it!! I am 4 months post op and had no
troubles...I attribute that to following everything my doctor told me to
do. Put it this way, if you are already looking for ways around the rules,
you will continue to do so after WLS surgery, so think long and hard about
what you are doing, you do not want to sabotage yourself before you ever
get started. Good Luck and I hope to see you on the losing side.

Hi Michael, I am about to start my two week liquid diet as well. I know
that I won't be able to do the whole two weeks so I am making arrangements
to have pretty healthy food available for those times.
However, make sure that you do NOT "cheat" for at least the last
two days before surgery. You do not want to have any food in your stomach
for the surgery. The doctor has put you on this diet so that your liver
will shrink. It is important to shrink your liver in order to be able to do
the surgery laproscopically. Otherwise, if your liver hasn't shrunk enough,
they will completely open you up from breast bone to belly button.
Make sure you do as much of the liquid diet as possible. You should strive
for at least a 20 lb decrease in your weight.
Good luck to you!

I'm probably going to get scolded for this, but I slipped up a few times
during my pre-op diet and everything went fine with my surgery. However,
you're put on that diet for a reason so you should try to stick to it
without cheating. I'm 1 week post-op and I ended up having to do an extra
week of liquids b/c when I went in for my surgery on 12/18 I had a fever
and had to reschedule for 12/26. I was so upset! The best advice I can
give you is keep drinking and STAY BUSY!! Best of luck!

I was never required to do any liquid diet ever...I was asked to lose 10-20
lbs and I did on my own. The day of surgery they brought us all a 4 oz
protein drink and water...The next morning we had a menu to choose
different foods from...I picked cottage cheese and applesauce...And
continued eating food from the start. It's been 5 years.....I lost 158
lbs...I kept off 150 for 5 years...Only complications were vitamin
deficiencies...So...Do your liquid diet, as it's to help you lose a little
weight...and if you "mess up" and eat a little, don't eat
anything really unhealthy...If you "have to" eat something, make
it a good choice of something lean and low cal! For your own good! Just
lose some weight prior to surgery! It makes it easier on you and the
surgeon. Good luck!

Michael,
For the most part, everyone does do the full 14 days. If you mess up
enough; you will have to reschedule your surgery and start the pre-surgery
regimen all over again. Like everything else in life; cheating only hurts
you. Or perhaps you aren't ready to really do this yet. Think about why
you really wanted to do the surgery in the first place. If your answer was
to be healthy and fit then you are ok. If it is purely for a certain look
or are just doing it to fit in or something superficial then you probably
aren't ready to make the commitment to lifelong health and fitness. All of
us meet roadblocks and stumble along our way to success and I feel sure you
will overcome this and have your surgery. Just remember how much you want
NOT to have a heart attack, diabetes or a stroke and that may be enough to
make you stick to your liquid diet, have your surgery and follow through on
your program until you reach your goal weight. I know the answer seems
lengthy but I care about people who care enough about themselves to change
what they look like for a healthy reason rather than a cosmetic reason. I
will pray for you.
Good Luck and God Bless,

My doctor put me on a 14 day liquid diet...he calls it the milk diet. But
I had soy milk, rice milk, clear broths and some SF jello's. It was very
hard at times, but as I grew used to it, I got to a point where the empty
hungry feeling empowered me. I realized that I was in charge of my eating
and stomach, and my stomach was not in charge of me! =)
The liquid plan is to get your liver in better condition, less fatty and
healthier before surgery. I lost 12 pounds before surgery and the doctor
was very pleased. Surgery was 2 1/2 months ago and I've lost 60 lbs. I
have about 75 more to go.
You can do it!!!
