Question:
Sore throat, cold symptoms
I have been coming down with a cold. I am just over 2 weeks post-op rny, and I know my medication options are limited. Does anyone know of a medication I can take for congestion, sore throat, and ear infection symptoms? I understand I cannot take any NSAIDs, anything with pseudoephedrine, as well as medications that are sugary. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate. I apologize if this question has been asked already, but I was unable to find the answers when I browsed earlier. Thank you for any suggestions!! — Mandee B. (posted on August 27, 2008)

I would call your surgeon office and ask them what you could take. I knew
about the no NSAIDs, but not pseudoephedrine. I tolerated liqued tylenol
right out of the hospital, you might check out that line of meds. I know
they make a cold formula, but not sure of what is in it. Hope this helps.

Call your surgeon and you will be advised on what is safe for you to take.
ALWAYS talk to your surgeon when medications are the issue.

I haven't been able to take most cold products for many years due to other
healthy issues. So for a cold, i take: Regular Tylenol for pain, Hot green
tea for the sore throat w/ a bit of honey, Nasel Salien mist for a stuffy
nose. As far as the ear problems, you should see your dr. Cold remedy's
won't make a cold go away any sooner, you just have to do things to make it
more bareable. This works for me. Good luck, and i hope you feel better
soon. Blessings.

This is a little late but, the best thing for colds is not to get them in
the first place, by taking a good powerful "liquid" vitamin /
mineral supplement . Full of lots of minerals to help prevent cold. Go
to www.TrySomeVemma.com Vemma has 1000 IU of vitamin D3, a must.

I agree...ask your surgeon. BUT I got a cold 2 weeks out and I took Tylenol
cold and flu - liquid. It really helped me. There's a daytime and nighttime
liquid. Check with your doc first, but these helped me a lot.

If you have a cold and congestion, that is one thing... but if you have ear
INFECTION symptoms... you may need an antibiotic. I would suggest a call
to your surgeon, perhaps he/she can prescribe something or at least check
you out.
If you do take anything over the counter, especially in liquid form, be
sure it is sugar free. Some of them have quite a bit of sugar. Cold
preparations can raise blood pressure as well.
I guess, call the doc... they are always your best resource, especially so
newly out of surgery.
It has taken me so long to type this as my grand kitten "Nalla"
is in a wild and crazy mood and is "helping" me type. She was a
surprise when I got back from vacation a week or so ago. A 10 week old
orange and white tabby and boy is she a rascal. We have other cats and 2
-14 month old grandpuppies (pit bulls) and she is not afraid of any of
them. She now is the ruler of the house. Very cute, very bossy.
Sorry, I digress. Keep us posted and good luck,

I was told by my surgeons office when i asked that as a rule of thumb
anything tylenol is ok to take as long as it is not the ones that are
extended release.

The absolute best thing for congestion is TUSSEN, or Musenix; it has this
stuff called guaifenesin in it. This is what will break up the congestion.
It's an expecterant. I had hip replacement 2 years ago and came home from
the hospital with a runny nose and and scratchy throat. Ten days later I
could hardly breath. I went to the doctor's office and they sent me to the
ER so I could get the tests I needed all at once. After a whole day of
Dr.'s and Hopsitals, the ER doc said all I needed was an over the counter
medication with this guaifenesin stuff in it. All that to be sent home
with nothing and be told to go to the drug store and pick up Robitussen, or
Tussen (cheaper in the genaric form with the same thing in it). Be careful
if it has alcohol in it, it may hit you hard. Don't take it if you need to
go anywhere. Just take it lay down and take a nap. It really does work
for your congestion and might help your ears if it's the congestion that's
making them hurt. P. Bowers

I am only 6 days post RNY... Why can't you take pseudoephedrine? They
gave it to me in the hospital due to sever sinus issues. I have been
taking the 12 hour sudephed twice a day since day one. The first 2 days
they crushed it up and it drank it in water but then I just swallowed it.
