Question:
Liquid Diet
Ok so I am wondering with this liquid diet how far is the word liquid extended? I am curious and will be calling my nutritionist in the morning but for instance can I use any salsa strained to just give the broth extra flavor? Or what about spaghetti sauce strained? Or does anyone have any other suggestions? I am eating popsicles, pudding, broth, yogurt, and 100% juice. — bridgadean (posted on July 21, 2008)

Protein drinks are considered liquid....If you pureed meats and veggies and
added a few ounces to mostly broth...that is still considered liquid. Then
again so is a milk shake...But you'd find more health in a broth with
purred meat than a milkshake...So it's a mater of discretion
really...Personally, I was so NOT into sweet liquids and cannot do all the
posiscles and puddings and sweet protein drinks...So whenever i do liquid
proteins for whatever reason...I do mine with meat and veggies...Tomato
juice included! Lentil soup...Cream soups...Soups with beans (all pureed)
If you can't sip it throu a straw...It's not a liquid...

anything that starts out a liquid- you didn't say if you were pre-op,
post-op etc. if pre op they are trying to see if you can follow their
directions. if post op, then its important to follow it- but i took soups
and blended them added with some broth- but post op, even now, never 100%
juices because of the sugar content. if its pre op, i would just do
protein drinks unless its clear liquids, then its broth, jello, popsicles.

The liquid diet is to shrink your liver, so it needs to be low-low-low
carb. My surgeon gives his patients all the supplements that are needed for
pre-op diet because he says that patients usually do not stick with low
carb if left to their own devises. They are no more than 15 carbs per meal.
Call your NUT just to be sure. Good luck. Paula

My nutritionist told me anything that can go through strainer is considered
liquid. so ya the salsas fine. Herbal teas are good. you can ice them or
have them hot. Creamed soups are ok. protein shakes, I like campbells
chicken tortilla soup broth with a dab of sour cream it melt in and gives
it so much more flavor.

If you are on a totally clear liquid diet and need to give your broth a
little extra flavor try adding a bay leaf to it before heating it. I was
haviing trouble drinking it - seemed so bland. This helped alot. Good
Luck!
