Question:
depo shot and gastric bypass
So I've started the depo shot, and I know women experience different things on it, like irregular periods, or none at all, or extremely heavy for a long time...I've been bleeding for about 2 weeks, very heavily for the past 8 days maybe? Just wondering if this is a normal reaction with gastric patients, or am I just one of the unlucky ones where its really heavy for a long time? — wecangetright (posted on April 8, 2007)

I am not sure if this helps.... I've been on depo shot for years and way
prior to WLS. When I first started, I had hot flashes and was sick to my
stomach - like morning sickness. I never had heavy flow. I spot once/twice
every few months. I do not have regular periods anymore. After surgery - I
spotted for a few days. I am 7 weeks post op and I've spotted a few times
snce then. Bottom line - yes.....WLS can affect your period. If you are
concerned, call your surgeon and gyno just to be safe.

I've taken the depo provera shot for several years, even prior to RNY. I
may occasionally spot but for the most part I have no periods, no signs of
periods. I've never experienced heavy bleeding at all. In fact, that was
part of the reason I started getting the shot-because I was bleeding
heavily and so irregularly. I'd contact my doctor if it were me to get his
opinion. HTH...

I started Depro in Septemeber. I had my surgery in December so I had my
shot just a few days before surgery. I started my period just a few days
after surgery (spotting) and it has not stopped. I had the shot in March
and it did nothing. The doctor says it is because I have lost so much
weight in such a short time that estrogen is being released into my body.
I hope you do not have to put up with what I have had too!

I started doing the depo shots in Dec 2006. I went two months not having a
period. The third month I had my period and it last for two weeks. Since
then I have not had my period again. I told myself that if it lasted
longer than 2 weeks I would call my doctor. But it did not. If it
continues, you might just want to call your doctor. Take care.
