Question:
I am having trouble with protein

Hi, i had my surgery on March 9th and i am not getting hardly any protein in right now. I need ideas on what i can do. I can hardly stand the protein drinks and i bought liquid protein as well and it is everything i can do to get it down. I don't like the texture of yogurt so now that is a problem. I am thinking i just have to drink it rather i like it or not and get it done. Does anyone have any suggestions or have this same problem with getting all the required protein in. Currently my dietician wants me to get 80 grams of protein in a day. It is just impossible to get anything in right now.    — missyheffelfinger (posted on March 25, 2007)

Ricotta cheese with Ragu Pizza sauce and parmesan cheese melted in the microwave Peanut butter Cottage cheese with cinnamon Canned chicken, Tuna or salmon with mayo pureed in the food processor or blender Eggs with parmesan cheese or shredded cheese Tilapia sauteed in a little olive oil and lemon Mix danon lite and fit yogurt with cottage cheese Hard boil an egg and add it to canned tuna or salmon I assume you are on purees now but if you are on soft foods try shrimp or shrimp salad. Soups are good too. Add unflavored protein powder to everything Keep trying the protein powder and make it interesting with sugar free syrups or sf chocolate syrup, or a piece of banana. Use water instead of milk. Add crystal lite to the protein powder and water. Tell your dietician of your problems and she should help you with more suggestions.

The above suggestions are great... some of the foods you may have problems with or not, you just have to try it and see. I added protein powder to my cream of wheat in the morning and to yogurt or my pureed soup for lunch and dinner, this way I was able to get my protein in. You should get with your dietician as was suggested already. And, you may have to gag down the protein whether you like it or not. You will need that to heal and lose the weight and be healthy while doing it.

Hi Missy, What I have found that works really well is: I take 16 oz of water in a bottle add the to-go pouch of crystal light. (I have found that the Walmart brand is just as good and much cheaper) then I add Unjury unflavored protein and mix it all up. It is very good, and I do this 3 times daily at least. The Unjury is about the best I have found. Good luck and keep trying it cause we really need it.

Hello Missy, If you are talking about the Isopure No Carb Protein drinks -- I mix them with water and shake well -- that will get you 40 grams -- over half of what is the required daily. There is a chocolate and vanilla protein shake called Lean Body -- it has 40 grams of protein as well. One of those can be two meals. Chicken in water w/Mayo (I also put mustard in mine) plus the other suggestions that you have received. 80 grams -- that's more than what mine requires.

Egg beater omelettes with ricotta cheese inside. Mix ricotta cheese with vanilla extract, splenda, and cinnamon. Also, maybe you would be able to tolerate the Yoplait light smoothies. Cottage cheese mixed with sugar free apple butter or sugar free jello is also good.

I have tried many types of protein as well because I cannot get enoug from the food I am eating. I like the IDS New Whey Liquid Protein Drinks ( 24 or 42 grams of protein in 3.1oz) They come in the test tube looking bottles I bought mine on-line. I mix them in my water the Fruit Punch is my favorite. Also if you dont like the texture of yogurt mix it in the blender with some unflavored protien powder (i use jay robb) and a bit of sugar free juice or water and ice I had jaw surgery years back and I lived off these - I used to put a few slices of frozen peaches in it as well. Good Luck I can relate to you I am just 5 weeks out now!

I too have a hard time getting my protein in. I found that if I start my day with a protein shake, which I like, I don't stress so much the remainder of the day about getting my protein in. I'm 10 weeks out and mix myself 8 oz 1% milk with 1/2 very ripe banana, 1 tbsp peanut butter and a heaping scoop of chocolate protein powder that I purchase at Walmart. It is absolutely delish and I get about 42 grams of protein in one shake. The remainder of the day I have cottage cheese with SF applesauce (sprinkle a little splenda on it), egg beaters with cheddar cheese, canned chicken (sweet sue brand) with a little LF mayo, or even a small amount of some progresso soups. It really is a struggle to get all your protein, especially if you're having a hard time with meat. I feel awful after eating most meats, with the exception of fish which is okay but I can't make myself eat it every single day. Try protein bars but just buy single bars and try them before investing in a box of them because not all protein bars taste very good and the ones that do are usually high in calorie and carbs. I haven't tried any of the unflavored protein powders because I've spent a fortune on things that I haven't liked so they get thrown away and I can't afford to continue to do that.

There is a protein supplement called BeneProtein... each serving is 1.5 tablespoons, has 25 calories, and 6 grams of protein. You can mix it into food/beverage, no taste. It's whey protein (but lactose free). I have a really hard time drinking anything with soy protein... it just doesn't tase good to me. You can find more info about BeneProtein by doing a web search. Best wishes.

I sometimes add a babana and some cinnamon, sometimes blueberries, sometimes ... to my protein powder shakes. The important thing is to add something that YOU like. I get tired of the same old formula day after day so I try different things for variety. If I need extra sweetness, I use Splenda. As for "clumpiness" I eliminate this by using a good blender. My blender is one of the best but still does not get the job 100% done to my satisfaction (maybe 95%), so I follow up with an *immersion blender* treatment to get up to "99.44% pure" (like Camay, nothing in this world is 100% perfect). All this makes the concoction very smooth and adds air to the mixture which, to me, enhances the taste as well. (For liquid I use skim milk or a juice such as cranberry.) --- Hand shaking in one of those bar shakers that are sold for the purpose never gets the all the clumpiness out. Spend some money and buy a good electric blender (and maybe an immersion blender too).
