Question:
Can some one please tell me where I can find some scientific information
I am 5 and a half years post op and my body does not deal with b-12 so I have to have injections. I have been on anti-depressants for about 4 and a half years for Seasonal Affective Disorder, but I recently had to switch and am having a hard time finding one that works with me. My psychiatrist said she read something about gastric bypass and the inability to absorb certain meds but she can't find it now and so I am wondering if someone knows where I can get information about this. Thank you — californiaowls (posted on April 6, 2006)

Have you tried sitting in front of a light box for a half hour a day? this
can do wonders for SAD.

We dont absorb any time released meds. For B 12 did you try the type under
the tongue? Incidently SAD is pretty common I know lots of folks who have
it, nearly all had it before WLS. For ME this time of year is like a
energizer shot!

What I MEANT to say is we RNYers dont absorb time released meds properly
and my surgeon says dont take them. Absorbtion is very individual so the
dosae isnt reliable

I don't think there are any true scientific studies that have been done to
really "guesstimate" the amount post RNY'ers do or don't absorb
from time or extended release medications. As stated before, the best
anyone can do is try meds and see what works and what doesn't. My husband
and I are 3 years and 3 1/2 years out, respectively, and we are both on
extended release forms of antidepressants and they seem to be working just
fine for each of us! As far as antidepressants, that seems to be a very
individual thing - what works great for one person does nothing for the
next, so you may just have to keep trying until you find one that does the
job for you!

I am pre op and my dr put me on Wellbutrin 200mg a day. i was hesitant at
first but he told me that this pill is one that i can continue using well
after my surgery and ive read on different boards that alot of post ops are
on this as well. hope it all works out for you.

Most of us do not take timed release meds, but take the immediate release
and space them out ourselves. You can check with everyone to see how
they'e solved this problem: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG
