Question:
What is a typical diet 1 month out RNY?
My surgery was on Feb.28th and I lost 19lbs in the first week. Now in three weeks I only lost 7lbs. I get all my protein and water in, I exercise every other day. What's wrong??? Today I got on the scale and I gained 2lbs. My typical day is: breakfast-1/4c egg beaters w/skim plus, american chesse, and whole wheat toast w/butter. mid-morning-1 rice cake. lunch-turkey breast wrapped w/american chesse and light mayo or 4oz tuna w/light mayo and 7 crackers and cucumber. mid-afternoon- cottage chesse w/cinimmon and equal or sugar free pudding. dinner- 4oz. turkey meatloaf 2oz. mashed potatos w/skim plus. snack- sugar free popcicle or fudge pop. And I have a few pretzels during the day. Any help will be great. — pete (posted on March 27, 2006)

Take a look at what u are eating!!!! you are eating enough for 3 ppl. You
really need to revisit your dietican and get some help. From what you
wrote, unless u are kidding, you will continue to gain. Take away the
bread, butter, american cheese. You should be having after one year
approx. 1 cup to 1 1/2 cups per meal.

Hi Peter! I will be 21 weeks post-op tommorrow.. I know it's tough but you
have 2 hang in there. Every Dr. has a different idea of what you can or
can't eat and it seems to me.. just seems.. I am far from an expert that
maybe you are taking in a little too much at a time. For example..
breakfeast for me is a 1/2 of an english muffin with calorie-fat free
butter spray and a little peanut butter and I can barely finish that.. but
then again I am a woman. So.. like I said hang in there and call your
nutrionist and just run over your food diary with them.. if your making
mistakes somewhere, they will find them. Best of luck to you friend and
stay strong!

I am not an expert on this, and I will be 8 weeks post-op tomorrow, but I
am reading this and thinking look at all those carbs (not to mention the
butter). . . . maybe that is why the weight loss stopped.
I agree with the others, call your nurtritionist and talk over your food
diary with them . . . . Good luck

Ho there - i just turned 2 years post op on the 24th, and without hurting
your feelings, I dont eat that much in 2 days. I think you might have
misunderstood your surgeon or Nut- I realize every one of them has a
different protocol, but even after watching and reading, this is the most
consumption for a person 1 month post op I have ever seen- loaded with
carbs, and so many ounces of meat/protein a meal. However, if this is what
your nutritionist and surgeon WANT you to be doing, no problem, but if you
have mis-read or misunderstood, I think you may need to revisit them and
get it straightened out. Its funny, I am allowed 4 ounces of food 3 times a
day, and never have I even had more than 3 oz of tuna or beef, or chicken
etc. 7 Crackers are empty carbs. Butter? Mashed taters? well we could
have very runny dehydrated taters early post op, but I discovered it was
like glue, and I havent even tried bread because I would rather take up my
calories and carbs with better choices. I would really be interested in
knowing what your written protocol says, Please post for us. Good Luck

Hi Peter
I found this on another profile and had added it to mine so I knew
what/where it was if/when I needed it.
I just found this on another profile, I just wanted it for future reference
and didin't want to lose it, lol.
#1 - Do this for 10 days to break a plateau
#2 - Drink 2 quarts of water a day
#3 - You must have 45 grams of protein supplement and all your
vitamins/minerals supplements each day (some suggest at least 60 and up to
80 gr)
#4 - You may consume up to 3 oz of the following high protein foods, 5x a
day
beef
pork
chicken
turkey
lamb
fish
eggs
low fat cheese
cottage cheese
plain yogurt or artificially sweetened (?)
peanut butter
beans/legumes
You may also have:
sugar free popsicles
tea or coffee
sugar free soda
sugar free jello
broths/bullion (sp?)
crystal light drinks
#5 - If it's not on the list, you can't have it for 10 days!!!!
#6 - Keep a food diary and try to get up to 30 mins of exercise daily

I am 3 months post-op lap RNY....and eat 6 2oz meals a day. The doctor
calls it three meals w/ 3 snacks..but since they are all the same
size..it's like 6 small meals. My starting weight was 257lbs and I'm down
to 200 in the 3 months. By eating the six small meals it helps keep your
metabolism going...and keeps your body from going into starvation mode.

Peter, I have to agree with everyone else. That is a lot of food. I'm 2
months post op and I eat 1/3 of what you are taking in every day. I
figured I'm eating between 800 to 900 calories a day. 90% of which is
protein. No bread, no mayo, no crackers or cheese.
I'm down 38 pounds in 2 months. Sorry dude, which I had better news.

Peter I realize that everyone is different but this is what was worked up
for me: Bfst: 1 soft boiled egg, midmorning tea with splenda, lunch 2 oz
water packed tuna with 1/4Cfat free cottage cheese, midafternoon -1 SF
jello cup, dinner 2-3 oz broiled salmon with 1/2 small baked potato bedtime
snack SF popsicle plus 6 8oz glasses water throughout the day. Hope this
helps- sounds like you are eating too much- my doc also won't let us start
solid foods till about 6 weeks or more post op.

Peter, I am only 9 weeks out and you eat more than I do. I only eat 4-6
ounces of protein a day. My meals are 1/2 to 3/4 cups at a setting. I
only eat 3 times a day. I do get all my water in also. I exercise
everyday. I am down 44lbs. I understand that everyone is different but
you definately need to speak with your nutrionist. He/she could give you
better assistance on how to cut down your carb intake and the rest of the
food. Just hang in there and it will get better. One thing is you may
want to increase your water intake. Good Luck. Jamie

Hi Peter I had my RNY done of the 2/22 and I'm down 53 lbs. I eat 5 to 6
times a day but only 2 oz or less at a wack. Most of my meal is proteins.
I'm still having some difficulty with certain foods like breads, pasta and
I've acquired a dislike of anything sweet. Just the smell turns me off.
You defiantely need to talk to your nutrutionist. Our bodies need time to
change. Right now your pouch should only be able to hold 2oz is all.
Please see the MD or dietician your moving to fast for only being a few
weeks post op.

HI Peter, I realize you have a lot a people already answer you.
Yes, you are eating way too much. Every Doc is different, but, the average
person after WLS should only be eating 4 Oz.
meals 3 times a day no snacks. Lose the bread. I did not eat any bread for
8 months & am sorry I ever started. I am 2 yrs out & never got to
goal. Are you drinking 64 oz. of water a day. Stop snacking and start
drinking the water & I bet you start losing again. You should not be
hungry at this point. your are letting old habits rule your life. Don't let
that happen.
You have to change to healthy eating now or it will never work. Good Lcuk
& welcome to the other side. For Sure talk to Your Doc's office &
get away from that constant snacking that will kill any success you are
planning to have at this.

I always read these questions, but seldom take the time to answer. I just
could not pass this one up. YOU ARE EATING WAY TOO MUCH FOOD. At one month
post op RNY, you should barely be able to finish one ounce. AND you should
be eating soft foods only at this point, pureed stuff. You are beginning
very bad habits early. No wonder you havent lost any weight. In my first
month I lost around 40 lbs. But I was doing pureed foods only after 1
month, and no solids until at least 2.5 months. Unbelievable. You should
really re-think your diet plan buddy. You are going down the wrong road. I
am 15 months out and I cant even eat 3 oz. total food period. dont even
think about 4 oz turkey and 2 oz mashed potatoes. Youre getting too many
carbs!

Forgive me, I am a newbie and pre-op but I thought that 1 to 3 months post
op you would be on liquids to let the small tummy heal?

March 27, 2006
Hi Peter, I'm sorry I really can't give you a typical diet for an someone 1
month post-op, as I'm pre-op,(and just to be a smart a**, to some of you
who are post-op, he didn't ask if he was eating to much, he asked for a
typical diet, if your going to flame him the least you could do is also
answer his question) and I don't know if you really got some good answers
to your question, besides being told your eating to much, and it kinda
scares me, because I thought the whole reason behind this surgery was, in
the beginning it wouldn't allow us to eat to much? I guess I have more
research to do, but I would also check with your surgeon to see if
everything is alright with your pouch, that it is allowing you to over eat,
my surgeron doesn't allow solid foods for the 1st six weeks to allow our
pouch to heal completely, but again check with your surgeon. But anyways,
if you would like to know a typical diet for someone 4 weeks out, that is
allowed solid foods,I would check the Q&A library. If you click on
home, at the top of the page, then click on Q&A library, then you'll
see a column with post-op info. I would suggest to look under post-op diet,
I have found you can get alot of great info from the library. I hope this
helps. Plus look at it this way you've lost(if my math is right) 24lbs in 4
weeks that is pretty good, if you keep that up you will have lost almost
100lb in 4 months, right? Anyways, hugs sent your way. Jen ;)

First off, your losses are not unusual . . . weight comes off in steps, not
a steady, downward trend. A chunk comes off, then flattens for a while,
then a chunk drops off overnight, etc.
If your pants are getting smaller, it's all good. Don't worry too much
about numbers . . .
At one month out, I was still on clear liquids, 4 (30 gm) shakes/day, and
my vites/minerals.
When I first started eating, I bought a kid's chicken strip meal from KFC
w/mac & cheese & mashed/gravy. I threw the rest away after I ate 5
meals from it.
At 3 years out, a typical meal is 1 Taco Bell Taco, or 1/2 Double Cheese,
light cheese from McD's, or 1/2 chicken thigh with 1/2 cup veggies or
salad. Last night: 1 chicken wing, 2-3 bites each baked beans and
coleslaw, 2 bites biscuits. Night before: 1X2" baked halibut, 1/2 c.
green beans almondine. Luch today, 2 slices (1/4") summer sausage, 2
sm slices cheddar, 5 carrots with dip (real sour cream).
I also do 6 (30 gm) protein shakes/day. My doc (and I) thinks all RnY
patients need at least 3 shakes/day.
Hang in . . . and good luck!

Hi all. Whew! Can you feel the fire? One thing I have learned from me &
three other family members and several friends in different states having
had this surgery is - every Dr. is different and every opinion of diet at a
given point is as different as the people themselves. So, I would
recommend, besides talking with your health care provider or nut, is
looking up foods & nutrtion at Fitday.com, LAWLS, and Bariatric Eating
or bypassbuddies. To decide where you want to be at the end of this
journey, what it's going to take to get there and how much or less or
quality of foods you should be eating a a given point. Looking up gastric
bypass month by month is also a good source of information to help you
figure out where you would like to be. Best wishes and welcome to the
loosing side.

The newbie, pre-op again. I don't think anyone was mean or negative in
there replies. Just plain truthful and honest. And I know that is what I
need.
