Question:
HOW LONG AFTER RNY SURGERY WHERE YOU ABLE TO TOLERATE BREADS ?
LOOKING FOR FEEDBACK ON BREAD POST-OP. WHAT TYPES WORK FOR PEOPLE. ARE THEY BEST IF EATEN ALONE. ARE SANDWICHES POSSIBLE? THERE ARE A LOT OF LOW FAT BREADS OR MUFFINS ON THE MARKET; ARE ANY OF THESE WORKABLE & ABOUT HOW LONG AFTER SURGERY DID YOU WAIT ? THANKS — [Anonymous] (posted on June 6, 1999)

After the RNY type surgery? I really didn't have a big WAIT. I could eat
crumbly breads, grain types after I resumed solid food. I did better with
toast some days. It WAS awhile before I did the soft white bread kind of
thing. Or even soft flour tortillas. I did crispy, crumbly things in
preference. Crackers, chips, like that. But with the procedure I have, I
am immune to fats, pretty much.

I waited at least 6 weeks until I was on solid food again . . .
However, I kinda think bread is a waste of time and space. I prefer to eat
the sandwhich filling without the bread it comes in, and I was a major
bread lover before . . . at around 2 months post op I used to eat 3/4 of an
egg and 1/2 a piece of toast for breakfast, now I just eat a 1 oz. piece of
mozzerella cheese around 11 am. What I am trying to say is that bread is
a filler food and we all loved to try and get full pre op . . . now I hate
the feeling of being full so I avoid food that makes me feel that way, and
bread happens to be the worst offender. I'll take protein and fat over
carbohydrate and bread and day . . . Amazing changes!!

What types of food each person can tolerate is a totally
personal thing. I can do bread on occasion, but I would rather
have just the insides of the sandwich like sliced cheese and
deli meats. Sourdough seems to be best for me. Probably
because it is so low in fat, or fat free altogether. I do
mini bagles occasionally for a meal.

I was able to handle breads at 3 weeks post op but now that I am almost 6
weeks post, I don't really like the heavy feeling that bread gives me. I
prefer crackers of all kinds and even chips (the baked ones are great).
I'll still do the sandwich thing once in a while but it fills me up so
quickly and I'd rather just have the cheese, meat, and veggie on the
inside.

You know I was told that I am not allowed bread until I reach goal. In fact
rice, pasta, potato or breads are out. I eat 70% protein and 30% vegtables.
That is it. Its interesting how different Doctors handle this. I had a
open RNY gastric bypass two weeks ago.

I ate bread right off the bat. My doctor said as long as I chewed
it up good, and it didn't bother me, then to go ahead. I have lost 91
lbs thus far, since March of this year, and am working hard to get
to that 100 lb mark now. You will find that not only this but a
bazillion other questions are answered in so many different ways,
depending mostly on the type of surgery, as well as the Doctor.
Good Luck to you!

I tried a very small piece of white toast when I was about three weeks
out(LAP RNY) and what a BIG MISTAKE !!!! I was in agony for about 7 hours
until I finally was able to throw up. Needless to say I am now scared to
death to try bread again and I am now 7weeks post op. If in doubt DONT DO
IT.

I am 8 months post op and still cannot tolerate breads. I don't think that
it is because it would make me vomit or even be nauseous. I have no clue
why. I used to love breads and bagels especially. Oh and to have a nice
turkey sandwhich on soft white bread was heaven. Now the thought of any
type of bread repulses me. I have tried bites but just can't do it. I
find myself craving and wanting it - but just can't do it. I have lost 117
pounds and have 20 more to go so I should not complain. I really would
like to eat breads again someday. I have found many other things that
repulse me as well like most meats - I just don't eat them, but want to.

It has been 10 months sence my surgery and I still can't eat bread, I can
get it down but it won't stay there, no matter what kind I try it just
won't work. My Dr. told me to keep trying sometimes it just takes a while
for certin food. So just keep trying

MY DOCTOR RECOMMENDS WAITING 3-4 WEEKS POST-OP TO EAT ANY TYPE OF BREADS. I
KNOW THIS WILL SOUND GROSS BUT HE SAYS THAT WHEN YOU SWALLOW BREAD, IT JUST
TENDS TO SIT IN YOUR POUCH IN THE FORM OF A DOUGHBALL AND WILL BE VERY
DIFFICULT TO DIGEST. YOU NEED TO GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO HEAL FROM THE
SURGERY BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING THAT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO DIGEST. DIANE

I am currently 10 days post-op and have been craving some real food. I
ground up extra-lean meat for tacos for my family, spooned out a little
before adding seasoning, then put it in a flour tortilla. YUMMM! I was only
able to eat half, but chewed it really good, and had no problems after.

I ate 1/2 slice of toast with peanut butter on it the 2nd week after my
surgery..I was so hungry for something solid.. My cousin never went on
liquids after her surgery..Her Dr. said she could eat what ever she wanted
as long as she chewed well and didn't eat to much...She is 3 yrs post-op
and doing fine..I think it varies with each person..Like dumping..I have
yet to have a problem with dumping...I try to eat sugar-free stuff but I
had a bite of Angel Food Cake today and didn't dump...I think you should
listen to your body and eat what it wants as long as you are careful and
making good food choices....

I am almost 3 yrs post op, its certain textures of bread that I can not
tolerate. Normal sandwhich bread seems to be okay, but bread like from
subway or schlotzskys OMG it hurts so bad for hours to days before it
finally gets through, If it hurts I can only imagine what its possibly
doing to my surgery work.
