Question:
Did everyone have to have the filter put it in.
Hi I am having thelap band taken out and having RNY on May 11,2010, I did my pre op today, I was told that I have to have a surgery on May 6 to have a filter put in. I dont know anything about that if someone could please give me info on that. I am scared about the surgery but everytime I get on that scale and it keeps going up, I get less scared. — JANIECEMOM (posted on April 27, 2010)

I had an IVC filter put in my right leg the day before my surgery. I think
I was in the hospital for about 4 hours total, including the two hour
recovery period required by the hospital. They numbed me for the
procedure; make sure they numb you very well. It was inserted near the
groin area. My lef was stiff for a few hours afterward, but after that
passed, I didn't even know it was there.
I had it removed in February (8 months out) and removal was nothing I
expected! They go in through the collar bone area to pull it out. Twilight
sedation was administered. The scar is teeny tiny but I had really bad
bruising for a week; not to mention the gimormous gauze used to cover the
incision that was visible above my shirt collar.

Not everyone needs the IVC filter. It is used to help prevent blood clots
from reaching the lungs, heart or brain in patients with a high risk for
blood clots. Some of the risk factors are very high BMI, history of blood
clots, and heart conditions to name a few. This is just an added safety
precaution for you. My cardiologist has recommended this for me also. Hope
this helps.

I have to have an IVC filter put in the day of surgery. I was a little
nervous about this also, and was wondering why they are waiting until then.
When the doc did my blood work they found out I have a factor V blood
disorder which puts me into a higher category for blood clots. I was told
that they take them out. For me personally, I would rather have 1 in
because blood clots are one of the main complications to the surgeries.
Good Luck with everything
