Question:
No red meat after surgery.

Is it true that you can never have red meat after gastric bypass? I read that on this site and cannot find any info to back it up. (I am huge steak lover!) Thanks, Marcia    — marcia5000 (posted on February 10, 2009)

Steak is fine. You just need it to be very tender and moist.

Completely untrue. Kathleen C. Follow our adoption journey at www.freewebs.com/jessieshome You can't change the world by adopting one child, but you can change the world for one child.

Unless YOUR surgeon tells you otherwise - you can eat Steak. I wouldn't eat it everyday, but you can eat it. Some people cannot tolerate it so be careful the first time out of the shoot.

My Doctor's rules are no red meat for 6 months. I know every doctor is different, and so is every person. I guess it just depends.

Not true at all. It may become and individual thing... I can (and do) eat steak as long as it is a good cut of meat that is very tender. I do have a problem digesting any kind of meat that is tuff or "stringy" but who wants a tough cheap steak anyway??? I like the filet migon (SP?)becuase it comes in a 6oz and I can just cut it in half and save the other half for breakfast....

There is no reason why you cannot eat "red" meat after undergoing gastric bypass surgery. You just have to make sure you chew your food very well, taking small bites, and taking time to eat. I actually prefer beef to all other types of meat...It digests better for me...chicken and pork are sketchy at best whether or not they are cooked right for me to tolerate...Most meats need to be undercooked in order to settle right for me and my steak I like really reallt rare...but most all proteins as long as tender and juicy do go down fine...I do have a friend who still cannot eat red meat 5 years out...

Like everyone else has said, it's not true that you can never have it post GBP. Personally, I'm about two and a half years post op. and I stay far away from it, the times I tried it did not end up well. Felt like a rock in my pouch, got stuck, got the foamies, puked for hours. I also have a hard time with chicken and tuna, but it's just me. Not everyone is the same, unfoturnately I did not luck out and most thing don't agree with me. Everything is pretty much trial and error with this surgery.

Never heard of it...I don't eat it daily because it is not the leanest of meats and sometime hits my pouch like a rock...but it is the best form of iron...and I eat it often when I am low or menstruating...

Hi Marcia. I have not hear this. I am allowed to eat red meat, however I cannot. Porkchops , roasts and most beef is just like putting a rock in my belly. It just sits there and feels uncomfortable. But I can and do eat ham as in a boiled dinner, I can eat bacon..not often, but can, I can eat shaved steak, sizzle steak etc with out much problem. But chicken and fish are my preferred meats these days. I am almost 8 months out and eat very little still, 4 oz or less per meal. I am 8 lbs from goal weight. Hope this helps. Good luck! hugs, Kim

It will be two years in April since by bypass and I still have trouble digesting red meat and bread, pasta. I loved steak too but don't really desire it now because it so hard for me to digest. After all of that you are going to have to be the judge yourself. Everyone is different. I know of people that have a hard time with chicken and rice and I have no problems with them. Prior to surgery we were told that for many people it is difficult to digest red meat. Since surgery, I have difficulty with any meat, be it red meat, poultry or fish. I am 5 1/2 months out and just not beginning to be able to eat a couple bites of chicken and fish. But from talking to others in my bariatric support group, most of them have no trouble eating beef - in fact some say they do better with beef than with chicken!

THAT IS NOT TRUE. I LOVE GOING TO TEXAS ROADHOUSE AND I SOMETIMES HAVE THE ANDY'S STEAK(FROM THE KID SECTION). I USUALLY CAN'T EAT ALL OF IT EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT THAT BIG, BUT I DO ENJOY WHAT I CAN EAT OF IT. ACTUALLY IT AGREES WITH ME VERY WELL. DON'T EAT IT IF YOUR SURGEON SAYS NOT TO, BUT IF YOU CAN TRY IT AND IF IT DOESN'T AGREE WITH YOU WAIT A WHILE AND TRY IT AGAIN. THAT'S THE ONLY WAY TO FIND OUT. GOOD LUCK TO YOU.SMOOCHES

This is just another example that you can NOT believe everything that you read here. ALWAYS make sure to do your homework before following ANY advice from here. Of course, your best source is your surgeon. However.....meat=protein, and what do you need after WLS?? PROTEIN!! As many others have said, you must remember to chew, chew, chew everything, meat is no different than that! Make sure you get a nice, tender piece, chew it well and slowly and don't over-do it. Take it slow, there is nothing to be ashamed of if you have to save some for the next meal or the next day!! Best of luck to you in your new life!!

Personally, I find tomatoes and potatoes help me tolerate meat better, but all meats are eventually possible. I've eaten jerky since the second week, and NO steak is that tough. Lol You can eat anything you can tolerate, but not everything is good for you. It cannot be overstated that you have to take SMALL bites and chew them THOROUGHLY and SLOWLY. You can't really hold a conversation and do that, can't graze while eating, and solve problems at work, home, or in love while eating, unless you like pain. ANY stress will make anything I eat hurt for an hour or more. If you're stressed or angry, wait until it passes before you eat. Walk, if possible, after eating to speed up metabolism and help digestion of your food. Good luck and enjoy your steaks, wisely! Dusty @};-

Absolutely not-- and I'm glad. I'm not a steak fan but my mom makes a mighty fine (moist and juicy!) meatloaf. I find that I tolerate any meat well as long as it's moist enough and I chew it well.
