Question:
Maintaining weight after 1year post op
I had RNY done 11/26/07, was 338llbs when I started the program. When I went into surgery I was 309llbs, I weighed 179llbs at my 1 year check up,I was at a 8 week plateau of that weight~ I told the doc that I wanted to get down to 140llbs, he told me that he didn't want me to loose much more and getting down to that 140lb mark may put me in danger of my body going into a malnutrtion/starvation mode,he told me that I am healthy and I look good and myBMI is right where it should be I am 5'2 Well, I was happy with what he said, I lost 159lbs since I started the program and lost 130lb 1 year after surgery, but now I started to loose weight again, I really haven't been eating any different than before I plateaued, so as of today I am at 160lbs, I have called the dietician, she has given me some pointers,ex- back off on protein and I do need to eat more carbs so I am hungry more often) but does anyone out there have any other suggestions? ideas? or does anyone else have this problem too? I don't want to get into trouble with malnutrition/starvation! Thanks! Lisa — lisa3959 (posted on January 23, 2009)

I had to stop the massive cardio - only do once a week. Do strength
training 3x a week. I added more calories. Less protein, added more carbs.
I eat all day long to try to maintain. If I get sick and have a bad week
where I don't eat 24/7 - I love 5-7lbs. My nutritionist said your body has
a set weight and that until your body is happy and thinks you are at your
set weight - you have to go along for the ride. I did. My goal was 180lbs
which I hit at 6 months post surgery. I am now just shy of my 2 year
surriversary and am 145-150lbs. I am 5'8". I was 286 at my heaviest
and in size 26/28. today wear a size 4/6. If I lose 8 more lbs (8lbs per
bmi) my bmi will be under weight. I strive to maintain 140-150lbs. My new
goal in life. Went from worrying about being overweight to worrying about
being under weight.

I am also 5'2" and not small framed, but started out at only 265 (13
months ago). My goal was 140. Now I'm sitting at 129 and trying to stop
the weight-loss as well. I haven't decreased my protein, but have upped my
carbs and calories. All that did was slow the loss. I'm still losing
between 2 & 5lbs a month. I'm eating more often to try and make sure I
get the calories in. 6 or more. I don't have the benefit of having a
doctor or nutritionist to help me so I would also like to hear any tips on
what to do.

If you would feel better to lose more weight, I honestly don't think that
140lbs on a 5'2" person is too thin at all. And some might even say
that's too much for 5'2". Looking at your photos, you don't look but
130 lbs if that! So as far as "numbers", it goes to show that
numbers really do not matter if you feel good at whatever weight you
are...As far as malnutrition...I hate to tell you this but 75% of post ops
by year 5 have experienced deficiencies and/or malnutrition...Make sure you
get yearly labs and watch your levels...Don't ignore symtoms and go in for
labs if you feel bad, start losing hair, feel dizzy , foggy headed, tired,
weak, muscle aches or spasms, achy joints, crumbing teeth, shortness of
breath and many many more! Keep taking your vitamins daily...Don't slack! I
had malnutrition with a 10 lb weight GAIN! YES...I really did! You need to
practice prevention...and vitamin deficiencies are usually just a matter of
adding a higher dose supplement to your daily vitamins to fix them with no
harm done. (unless you ignore symptoms too long)....I wouldn't worry about
losing a little more weight unless it is accompanied by some other
symptoms... Or it doesn't seem to stop...Then you want to go back to see
the doc! Just my humble opinion.

I'm post op four yrs 1/13/05 started at 282 now weigh 143 5"8, my
doctors goal weight for me was 167 but my body did not stop until it
reached 145, I went from a size 22/24 to a 2/4 I have to make sure I eat
because if I make any changes to my diet I loose weight and I don't
exercise for fear of losing more weight. Oh and I never got the hunger
feeling back so sometimes I do forget that I haven't eaten anything at it's
5pm.

Ladies,
Hi there. First, don't panic. Doctors are different depending on what they
believe and listen to per the media.
Part of the reason your doctor is doing that so that you will continue as a
patient for as long as possible. The smart thing to do is to have labs
done and to see another doctor explain about your surgery and go from
there. You always want to be sure that it isn't simply the surgery. If it
is that's fine. This is a better way to take care of yourself. Good Luck
and God Bless,

I would switch my doctor's. Why in the world would your doctor want you to
be overweight at being 5'2" and around 179 Lbs. Something sounds
wrong. I think a person should weight for 5'2" would be 135 lbs. Maybe
you should take more protein's and back off the carbs so you don't gain any
weight. This is just what I feel is the best for you. I don't want to seem
negative in any way but I think your doctor wants to to go to seem him
forever. Good Luck..

I am 5'2" and want to get to 135 lbs - my doctor says I should get
down to 129 - I figured I would wait until I get there and see how I feel.
He did say that our bodies know when they are happy, and we will naturally
stop at the weight our body is comfortable with - soemtimes it is more than
our "goal" weight and sometimes it is less - but the range for my
height is right around 125-135 depending on what chart you look at - that
is for a medium framed person. I really don't know where I would look and
feel best, as I have never been at a normal weight! My highest was 369 - I
am currently at 271. And what is your BMI? A healthy BMI is in the mid
20's.

Healthy BMI is 18.5 - 24.9 which translates for a person that is 5'2"
a weight between 103 - 135. Since you started over 300#lbs the higher end
of "normal" may be better for you. As most others mentioned, get
labs and judge the weight you need to be by the way you feel - not a number
on the scale. Following with a nutritionist is also a really good idea. I
have lost 186# in the last 11 months ( I am almost 5'8") and feel
very healthy but I still have at least 50 more per MD and would like to
lose 25 more than that but will still be a little over the normal BMI.
Listen to your body most of all. Pam, RN

WENT TO SIZE 12 WHAT A DIFFERENCE:) I AM GOING TO MY 20 YR CLASS REUNION,
AND CAN'T WAIT TO TELL MY STORY, I PLAN TO TAKE ALOT OF YOUR ADVISE,
SUGGESTIONS,AND IDEAS AND PUT THEM INTO USE! THANKS TO EACH OF YOU WHO HAVE
TAKEN TIME TO ANSWER. I WILL HAVE MY PROFLE UPDATED AS TIME MOVES FORWARD.
