Question:
reply about protien

to everyone who answered my question, I just talked to my nutrisionist and she said they don't hyave us drinking the protien shakes because people throw up their protien and when we eat our meal 3 times a day at least half of it is protien . They want the pouch to get used to the consistincy of food not a drink. And it is better if your pouch get used to solid food right away, you don't vomit as much and you don't have as many problems. And if at the first nut visit you fell week ,tired then they will give you a protien supplement. My doc and nut they work together, have been doing it this way for 10yrs and have not had any problems with this way of doing thing. So maybe you who have just had rny maybe you had better ask your nut & doc about this., it is better than getting sick.    — hlt1960 (posted on October 17, 2008)

I hate to say this but I really feel for you. I read your other question and the responses as well now this one. Besides the protein, you need fluids!!! You will become dehydrated very quickly if you do not get in your liquids whether it is water, protein drinks or even crystal light, etc. I cant imagine your doc and nut. pushing food like that when you can become dehydrated so quickly with this surgery. I have never heard such a thing that liquids will make a person sick after this surgery. You need liquid!! Plain and simple. And the protein is so important for so many things to do with your health. Protein is number one priority right next to fluids with this surgery. And just eating high protein foods, you do not ingest all the protein from those foods because of the way the food now breaks down in such a tiny little stomach. I wish you the best of luck and because of what I feel is very bad advice from your doc and nut. I hope that you do not become extremely ill and end up with other complications from having your surgery because of lack of protein and fluids.

I have never heard of anyone going straight to solid food after surgery. I am 7 weeks out and I still can't get enough portein from food and if I get enough food I don't get enough fluids. Be very careful doing it this way. I hope that this works out for you....... My nut said that there are some who will drink one protein drink a day after a year out.

I hear ya everyones Doctor is different. Mine says ibuprofen no problem, others have said never to take again after surgery. Mine does not have me drink milk of mag or any other stomach med every day as I heard the other day someone say "OUR Drs said we would need to drink every day". Mine says no problem small amounts of potatoes, learn to eat sm amounts to get certain things your body needs. I see so many varies from other members that they where told by their bariactric team Doc. etc. I try to do as my doc, team says and have tried somethings that work for others. I hope things work out for you best of luck Tammi

I've been going to support groups regularly since my surgery and have never heard of this phenomenon. Good for you for asking them. I'm celebrating my one year surgiversary soon and have NEVER thrown up, so it doesn't happen to everyone, and hasn't happened to anyone I know of. That being said, follow what your doctor said, but please don't assume that our doctors are wrong. It sounds like it's just a different way. Mine brings you along slowly to give the pouch time to heal. That's her way and what she's found to work for her patients. I made the transition from liquids to soft foods to regular foods with little to no problem.

My surgeon does it the way yours does and he also works with a nutritionist...We ate food right from day one in the hospital and I rarely had any involuntary vomiting either! ( 2-3 times over the last 5 years were my own fault...eating too fast or too much or once when I got a tomato skin stuck over my stoma) No protein drinks UNLESS we could not get enough protein and we were only to use it in the first few months ...after that we were to eat our protein in real foods...(Protein had to be high quality, no soy and no added vits...plus it had to have 13 of the key amino acids or it was not aproved by my nut) Kept my weight off almost 5 years now without protein supps...Just because 100 people have the same instructions...does not mean that two that have different ones are wrong or less likely to work...Some of the BEST ideas come from people who think outside the box and away from the masses. And most people will follow the "most traveled" road to "feel" safer. That's where all the traffic and crazy drivers are! LOL ...But to be honest though...I do drink a protein drink now and not the high quality "whey only " my surgeon wanted us to use if we did...I can't tolerate whey at all and only a little whey isolate...so I do a high quality soy-whey isolate mix...So...use your own discretion in these matters... Don't trust those that say you "must always" and "never eat this or that"...People who use the words "must never" and "must always" are to convince the person that they don't think will believe them because they KNOW what they are saying might not be 100% true all of the time or they are only repeating what they are brainwashed to believe by someone they trust. They are often two of the most convincing lies ever used! But they are also used to stress importance that may not be a perfect fit for everyone! There is no such thing as never and always except one thing. Everything else there is no guarentee...People will "always" die...and people will "never" live forever in the same body. Those are the only times "never" and "always" are 100 % TRUE! ...It's just a strong statement for people who believe something at the moment...Not all rules are written in stone...and those that are...are impossible for ALL to follow in an ever changing world in motion. So don't worry! Do what you feel is the best suggestion...I only drank isopure protein (first three months PO) when I could not eat much or felt I was not getting proper protein (it's all I could tolerate in little sips)...Otherwise I ate my food! Didn't feel "great" when I ate...for a long time, but didn't vomit either...I was lactose intolerant and didn't know for quite a while! Just wanted to show you someone who had the same sugesstions, and different surgeon! It worked for me almost 5 years now and still counting!

I drink protein shakes that I add fruit and milk to. I am also able to eat all kinds of meats, vegtables and fruit. I have never had any problems. They may be wrong! Lisa

I'm 11 months post op and I still drink a protein drink almost everyday and I have never gotten sick. Protein helps us burn fat and keep muscle, it's very important for weight loss. It was several weeks after my surgery before I was allowed solid food, I was on liquids and purees for several weeks and I never got sick. I've lost almost 200 lbs in 11 months so I must be doing something right. Good luck with your weight loss.

Essentially, each person needs to follow their doctors nutritional prescription. There are apparently an abundance of ways that physicians feel about this issue, and each one believes they are right. However, I know I couldn't get anything down initially so without liquid protein I would have been back in the hospital. Linda

Dear Heidi, I can't add anything to what folks have already said but just wondering - what kind of WLS surgery did you have? How are you doing? I have also had energy level problems [lap band 5 wks. ago]. Take care -Barbara W. [aka, Oakroom]

My Doctor told me I did not have to drink protein drinks, and if I wanted I could have one a day because he said they make you gain weight.

Well let see, I have never heard of anyone throwing up just for drinking protein. Yes, it is a must to have some protein w/ every meal however, sometimes especially in the beginning you need that extra help. You should get at least 55-65 grams protein each day. There are some lo cal, nf protein supplements out there. or if you prefer the food, there are also protein bars that are extremely low in sugar and no carbs. Remember you dont absorb nutrients as you use too so more protein the better. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to take in your fluids. I ended up in the hospital multiple times due to dehydration which required an iv and potassium. Everybody takes food, types of food, drinks and supplements differently after the surgery. Listen to your body and make sure you take those supplements.

Everyone has there own doctor, and the doctors each have there own plan of how they want to handle each individual case, your nut maybe doing this for 10years, and that maybe the plan that works for him, but in the protein drinks you just don't get protein you also get your fluids in plus some extra nutrition. So just keep in mind we all support each other, on going thru the weight loss surgery, but each case and each doctor is different on how they have there programs set up. i had a girlfriend that went to a different doc then I did and her program was different than mine. If you don't take the protein drinks thats fine, but let everyone else follow there programs the way that they are told to do. I don't think people will get sick because they are taking protein drinks, I am almost 1 year post op rny, down -140llbs and am healthy and had no probelms with drinking protein drinks, and still do everyday. Hope this clears up your concern for others.

Hi! I just wanted to put in my 2 cents...I am four months out and had my first vomit earlier this week. I am now UP to 2 ounces 3 times a day ...with an ounce of meat being 7 grams of protein--give or a gram...there is no way I could get in 60 g a day. Protein aids in healing and by using the shake...you are helping your muscles to stay in tact. I would inquire about this at support group --if you attend one. Your first four bites should be of a high protein food and you are at a stage where if not on liquids, you are consuming pureed food. 4-6 tablespoons at a meal. If you chew the properly, wait the five munutes between bites , and don't drink while eating..or the 30-60 mins after...you should not get sick. When I just got sick, it was from chinese bbq beef and the sugar got me sick. I chewed the food and spit out the meat...I just wanted the taste and look where it got me! lol I am new to this, but I do know that your body will break down the muscles to get the protein needed to heal. your stomach will take a few weeks to heal. Forcing solid foods could cause a stitch/staple to tear..I wouldn't risk it. leaking could lead to death from peritinitis(sp), infections etc. Is ther eanother doctor you could ask questions to? I would even follow up with my pcp if I had to. Also --i was dehydrated for 3 weeks right out of the hospital ..It only took 3 days for me dehydrate , as I was unable to get the 64 oz in. Once I got all the gas out--the fourth day after surgery-- I could do it, but too late. I didn't lose any weight and it took me 3 weeks to get rehydrated drinking 80 ounces a day!! please listen to us on here!! we have been there..you know this--you have seen the q&a section... I hope you find this info useful, I will pray for you. God Bless, Kim
