OK GUYS, I REALLY WANT COFFEE!!! I AM 1 WEEK POST-OP LAP RNY. WHAT CAN I HAVE IN MY COFFEE? I KNOW EQUAL (WHICH I HAVE TAKING A LIKING TO).CAN I HAVE CREAMER? — latreshar (posted on August 20, 2008)

Herbal tea's, no coffee for 30 days regardless if it is caffanated or not.
There is something in coffee that effects your healing. If you had RNY you
got a lot of internal healing that needs to happen first. Give it a full
30 days.

LOL....My Nut told us she saw no really good reason to not have coffee...I
began drinking coffee several months out...(Maybe even a year) I was
drinking it with silk creamer...but graduated to the full sugar coffee
delights! (I know...bad bad bad) So when that stinky gas would NOT go
away, I realised I had to save my marriage and cut the sugar out! LOL
Kidding...kinda....So I began putting my vanilla protein powder in my
coffee. Two scoops on a giant cup with 1 C coffee and a little
(unsweetened soy milk) The probelm with that is if you do not have a
serious high powered hand mixer, you cannot whisk out all the lumps...So
you really need a tall hand prep mixer (mine is a Cuisinart hand Prep...was
24 bucks at Target) I LOVE IT! I use it daily...Rinse and store in a
drawer..It whips that proein smooth and leave a beaufitul foam on top like
a rich vanilla latte! YUMMERS! I use instant coffee now...Just nuke the
water one minute ...one scoop Nescafe Classico and the protein and soy
(lately been using lactaid milk 2/%)....31 G protein for breakfast! I
start my day everyday this way! But...one week post op? Hot acidy
liquids? I dunno about that.

I had coffee when I had mine done, but that was 5 yrs ago now. We were told
to either use skim milk or non dairy powder milk for creamer. I just stuck
with the skim milk. Not as good as the creamer you are use too, but you
have to make changes.

From one non-conformer to another. I use skim milk and alot of it for the
protein. Plus you shouldn't drink it too hot. Shhhhhhh! Secret Club!

I had VSG so it may be different for you but we were allowed decaf only for
1 month. Caffeine is a diuretic and they don't want you to get dehydrated
so that's why the restriction. After 1 month, we are allowed up to 24 ozs
per day. And, yes, I do use powdered creamer and Splenda.
Best to ask your NUT though!

i'm assuming you are drinking DECAF coffee???? you can have creamer --
read the nutritional label on the bottle or package and see what is in it

I started drinking coffee within the first month after my lap RNY. I drink
it daily and use 1/2 and 1/2. I don't like my coffee sweet so no splenda,
etc. But you could add equal or splenda. There are creamers made with
splenda as well. I am at goal weight (down from 350 to 140 in 1.5 yrs) and
never had an issue with coffee. That is how I get in my 64 oz of fluids
per day as I can't drink water (tastes nasty since my bypass!).

I believe I waited until I was about six weeks out before I tried coffee
... My latest addiction is the iced coffee at Starbucks (I don't make
coffee at home) with 1/2&1/2 and sugar-free vanilla syrup. I usually
order a grande but I only finish it about half the time ... Usually I just
drink about half and then I'm done. I think I agree with the people who say
it's too soon for you to be putting hot, acidic beverages in your pouch ...
If you're dying and you can't stand being without it, talk to your
nutritionist or your surgeon before you take any chances! You definitely
don't want to make yourself sick!

I am going to brag a bit first about the Clinic I go to; it's UW-Health in
Madison, WI and is a Center of Excellence for bariatric surgery. They are
ADAMANT that we not drink coffee, esp. caffeinated coffee. It's rough on
our small stomachs. I believe decaf is not as bad. Anyway, this clinic has
had awesome long term success rates and I trust them. I have had decaf a
couple of times, esp. in the summer when I've had decaf iced lattes. We
also cannot drink soda which makes sense to me with all of the carbonation
and caffeine.

I started with coffee about 2 weeks out. i didn't drink a lot, I put
non-dairy creamer in it. I didn't drink it really hot, either. You'll
find that you won't drink as much as you think you will. Use a small cup
and sip slowly. I told my surgeon that if I couldn't have coffee, I would
not have the surgery. She said I can have anything in moderation as long
as it doesn't make me dump. I don't drink but about 1 1/2 cups a day, but
I would really miss it if I couldn't have it. Good luck.

It's so glad to hear from someone that misses coffee. I have a Starbucks
coffee shop where I work, so Everyday I have a Venti Breakfast blend with
1/2 and 1/2 and splenda. I also have a vanilla protein powder that I put a
shot of espresso and blend it in a blender bottle. (they are great, they
get rid of those nasty clumps.) I usually put it over ice and it lasts the
afternoon. I am slowly going to decaf so that by the time I have my surgery
I will be able to be over that caffiene problem. I also know that I will
only be able to drink a tall coffee with more half and half than coffee in
it, and it will last almost to noon. LOL.

Yes, but be careful I gained back 60 pounds from adding creamers to my
coffee. If you look in the coffee area at the store they have fat
free/sugar free creamers that taste pretty good.

I guess I am another non-conformer! I actually didn't like the taste of
regular coffee until about a year out. I did drink skinny (fat free/sugar
free) latte's from Starbucks @ about 6 months out & was happy to get
the protein. When I drink coffee now I use 1/2 and 1/2. I don't want to
lose any more wt & don't want to gain, so I just watch the scale, do
what makes me feel good physically, & take what people say with a LARGE
grain of salt! Ultimately what works for me may not work for you due to
intolerances or different tastes or different health issues. (For example;
"people" tell me I shouldn't eat fat blah blah blah...they do not
know that I have certain kidney issues/genetic conditions that make my skin
very dry & if I don't get fat my skin gets crunchy & cracks...so
like I said, listen to people's thoughts but you really have to do what
makes YOU feel best! HUGS!! ) BTW...I love coffee so much my kitchen is
a coffee theme so I can totally empathize!

I am just starting my Lap Band journey with hopes of surgery in January
'09. I have spent my adult life looking for a coffee maker that makes
really good coffee. Finally I got a Bunn with the stainless steel pot.
And oh my, it did not disappointment. So when I saw this question I went
right to it. The thing that gets me out of bed in the morning is knowing
that there is good coffee in the pot. I use Sweet & Low and light
cream. I only have one cup though. The light cream is 30 calories and it
has 2% of vitamin A (LOL). But who knows, maybe I won't even want coffee.
I can go out in the yard and share it with people walking by. LOL. Sorry,
I use humor to deal with life. Thank you all for your wonderful posts. I
need to know the real story and how everyone copes.
