Question:
What is your favorite item you used during your pureed stage?

I am looking for ideas for easy to use, cost effective, as well as multi-useful equipment to use during my pureed and soft foods phase post op. What is it called? Where did you purchase? How much did it cost? Mainly the ease of use is my biggest factor. I am just curious as to what you have all used to give me some ideas of what to purchase. Thanks all. :)    — bicngillette (posted on July 20, 2008)

A "Magic Bullet" helps with pureeing little things and I use it to make shakes today. Look for it on sale at Target. I use it almost everyday.

I went to target store 3 weeks ago and they said that they don't sell the Bullet anymore.. You can go to Walmart for $16.00 and get a very similar one made by hamilton. I found out that Costco sells them for about $60.00.

If you have the time and the means to order the Magic Bullet online (if you can't find it in a store), I've heard that is absolutely the best. I saw one for $45 in an ad, but I can't remember what store it was.

I absolutely love my hand held mixer. I would make a batch of butternut soup and use the stick mixer to puree it all together. The one I have is by cuisinart and it goes for $79.99 but I got it at a good deal of $49 at a discount outlet store near me. I also have a Magic Bullet type thing that I bought from Avon for $29. It works great and not as expensive as the Magic Bullet itself and has all the same components the MB has.

If you want versatility without a ton of cost, you can buy a good, inexpensive blender (which gives you the blender function) and a small "chopper" addition, which you use in place of the blender to function as a small-size food processor. They puree beautifully and easier to get small quantitities of food out than from way down the bottom of a blender. The advantage over my wand is that you can "pulse" the blender/chopper as your diet moves from puree to chopped, etc. Can't really do that with the wand which is meant for pureeing. Cheers from Canada. /Mike

I used a blender and pureed pot roast or roast beef with beef broth. This worked better than baby food from the store because the store bought stuff is low in protein. My mom pureed some pork chops and applesauce for me & it was delicious. You can put some squash in with the beef.

For protein drinks/smoothies and HOT coffee with protein and milk I use the http://www.cuisinshop.com/cuisquicprep.html (Quick Prep) It puts a foam on top of your coffee like a cappucino machine! It is high powered and whips the chunks right out of the powders and if you don't hold onto the cup, it will spin right off the counter! That little thing has power!!!! And for pureed foods I LOVE LOVE LOVE my http://www.cuisinshop.com/cuisminplusp.html (Mini food processor). You can find these for about 24-30 bucks each at Target or Walmart or Costco....I use BOTH of these daily even 4 years later...They are soooo easy to clean...Just rinse (unless it's meat or oily...wash with soap) and store in a draw or small space. I use the food processor for chopping onions, celery carrots...whatever....You can make a paste or crumbly meat in a few seconds flat...I use to make berry puree for my unflavored greek yogurts, or unsweetened applesauce with cinnamon....It's priceless to me...Both items have totally paid for themselves over and over again....

I used the magic bullet several times a day. It came with several cups, so I didn't have to keep washing all day. Just rinse off the blade. Worth the money. It did a great job pureeing.

I agree w/everyone else...Magic Bullet is the best thing I bought...you mix it up in the 'cup' you drink it from, just adding the little ring, so there's one less thing to wash up. I bought mine about 3 months after my surgery, but was in the process of packing up and moving from Belgium to Indonesia, and didn't actually use it til I arrived in Indonesia. I LOVE it. I make my protein drinks in it and I use it for my regular cooking...it's great for pureeing canned tomatoes into sauce, things like that. My favorite protein drink...a frozen banana, a little milk, a spoon of natural peanut butter, a small spoon of 'phoney' sugar of your choice, and a scoop of Any Whey unflavored protein powder. Mix it all up in the MB and it'll come out like a banana milk shake. If you add a 2nd banana and a little more milk, it can make a serving for your significant other or a child....and is even a little thicker to be like ice cream w/o all the fat, calories and sugar of ice cream.

My Magic Bullet was my best buy and used almost daily since my surgery in Feb, 2006. I tried a few other products and none came close. About a month ago I purchased the Magic Bullet Platinum from HSN.com ($79.95 plus shipping, though shipping was free when I bought mine.) It is more powerful than than the original (which still works as well as the day I got it!) The jars are larger and it comes with a full-sized blender attachment. So far, I've only used it to make protein shakes and grind coffee beans, and the packrat in me wants to buy another one for if and whenever in the future this one stops working, it works that well! This is the one item I would recommend, hands down! Good luck!

I used what I call the "baby" cuizinart. It's a smaller version of the well known cuizinart but it was only $26 in my local costco store. It would have been much easier having two of them, one for protein and one for vegetables, but I just washed it all out and then pureed the next food. It helped to add the 2 tsp. of olive oil and a little organic chicken broth to the chicken when I pureed it. Best wishes in your wls, Regina ([email protected])

I am still pre-op at this point, but I have to agree with alot of the others. The Magic Bullet is AWESOME!! I bought mine at Kohl's for $50. I had the Hamilton brand from Wal-Mart. It lasted about 2 weeks. The lid cracked and the motor burned up in that short of time. The MB has so far lasted 2 months!! Still working great.

UPDATE: I purchased the Magic Bullet yesterday at Walmart. I used it today to make myself a banana chocolate protein shake. It worked great so far. Thanks everyone so much for all the responses.
