Many people cheat, but the critical thing is more than losing the fat on
the liver, which is important. Your surgeon on a RNY is cutting open the
small intestine and if there is food remaining in the gut, it could get
leack into your insides and may cause infection. If you got to cheat, do
it early and get over it. My doctor tolds me to eat what I wanted for
thanksgiving Dinner with my family and then get back on the diet. My
surgery was December 5th and I had a RNY. Would do it all over again. I
am very happy with the results. Best of success to you.

The pre op diet is to help fatty deposits on your liver get a lot smaller.
This makes RNY surgery easy to do for the doctor. IF your liver is too
fatty, you may end up with a vertical scar on your abdomen, because your
liver was too fatty, and he had to do an open procedure. You should really
start some "control" over your habits, and this is a good place
to start. "Cheating" after surgery could lead to dumping, a
gruochy pouch from too much food. You also need to practice portion
control, very important when you begin to eat foods at the first part of
the post op phase. The RNY surgery will allow you to lose weight relatively
easy the first few months. The better you follow the surgeon's protocol,
the better the weight loss. After the first 6 to 8 months, weight loss
becomes more difficult, and you have to maintain control over your
appetite, food choices, portion control, hydration, and exercise. Beleive
it or not, this is still WORK. The surgery is the TOOL, and you have to use
your head to make the TOOL work properly.

You can but why not prove to yourself that you don't have to? It's only a
few weeks and will help the doccor have an easier time at the surgery...

cheated? lol i never did it to begin with...the way i looked at it was
that i was changing my eating habits forever once i had the operation and i
was going to have one last hurrah...as a matter of fact i gained 7lbs right
before my op! i had a cool doctor though...when he asked me if i did the
liquid diet i just gave him a look like you gotta be kidding me...he just
laughed and my operation went fine...now a little less than a year later
i'm 134 lbs lighter! best gift i could ever give myself!

I had my rny on December 27, 2008...two days after Christmas! I was
supposed to be on a full liquid diet two weeks before surgery and a clear
liquid diet one week before surgery. When Christmas day came and I had
worked on the huge Christmas dinner for my family, I couldn't do it. I had
a small plate of the traditional Christmas dinner and then got right back
on the clear liquid after dinner. I still lost, still had my surgery and
did just fine. I did fess up to my surgeon and he told me that it was ok
and that he understood completely. However, after eating liquids for 1 1/2
weeks and then eating solid food, I got very loose bowels.
Just try to do as your surgeon tells you and best of luck with your
upcoming journey!

If you are "not considering cheating", then why are you asking
this question?? This should not be an option. I don't know about you, but
I have been waiting for SOOO LONG, that when I finally do get to the liquid
diet stage, I plan on following it to the letter!!
Maybe you should think about why you are asking this question in the first
place. Are you worried that you will not feel full? Are you worried about
the other foods that you might miss?? This is supposed to be a turning
point in your life, use this tool as required so that you can have the best
possible start to a new life!! Besides, it doesn't matter if other people
have "cheated" and still lost weight, every person is different!!
You may be one of the people that cheats and gains more back, then have to
suffer the possibility that your surgeon puts back your surgery date, or
even cancels. Do you want that to happen?? I'm sorry to be so harsh, but
this is reality. Make losing the new reality in your life. We are all on
the same team here, I just want you to do the best that you can!

If you are considering cheating maybe you should rethink the chioce to have
the operation. This is where is all starts.. You have to make a life change
for this to work.

for the people that answered and were soooooo sarcastic - i never said i
was going to cheat. i know someone who did. so do not be so judgmental. i
have already lost 23 lbs before even starting the liquid diet so that is
why i asked!!!!!!!!!

I cheated on my pre-op (15 day) liquid diet, but only at the beginning of
those 2 weeks. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to have surgery... I
didn't worry until I was sitting at the hospital waiting for the results of
my ketone (?) test to show up. The nurse then said that whatever she was
looking at was very minimal. Do your best to stick with the plan!

I was terrified to cheat cause I didn't want to be cut open, but I snuck a
chocalet s/f posicle and 3 wheaties on Sunday night and my surgery was on
Tuesday. My thoughts on this diet were...If I had the self control to not
eat the things that were bad for me I wouldn't be having this
surgery..RIght? If you aren't worried about having an open procedure then
cheat...if you want to start this journey off on the right foot, keep
posting and stay busy for the days or weeks you have to be on the diet.
Best to you and remember just a tiny little step to get to the other side
of the rainbow which is just brilliant!!

Why would consider cheating? If you have made up your mind to change you
life with WLS then cheating isn't an option. You have had this first half
of your life to cheat and eat all the things you have eaten. Now it's time
to begin a healthy life that you will enjoy SOOOO much more and food won't
be the focus. Eat to live, don't live to eat. My husband has taught me
that. I'm only 3 wks post-op and have lost 20lbs and don't regret one bit
the changes i have made. I have decided that food won't RULE my life
anymore. Good luck and God bless

I never cheated once, and still lost only about 2lbs prior to my RNY.
Since surgery 3 weeks ago I have lost 36lbs. I found that if I stuck to
the diet I would less likely be craving foods after, and it worked for me.
