Question:
what birth control is everyone using, having problems with depo

I am currently on depo, but I can't stand it, its 3 weeks of a period with one week not having one, or else just a constant flow for the whole month. Does anyone have this problem with the depo shot? Its only my 2nd shot, so wondering if this problem will eventually fix itself? I was told not to take pills...just curious what advice others have on birth control    — wecangetright (posted on May 21, 2007)

Well i tried depo, (i havent had my surgery yet) and it was horiable. 3 months of period. i tired all kinds of birth control, from the pills (i now have two kids) too the patch and the shot, i fiannly ended up with the "T" and it has been great. My period is a little messed up but its more to do with my hormones then the "T" itself. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with depo, I bled for 2 1/2 months. I finally had my tubes tied, because I already have three kids and did not want anymore.I also felt like the hormones were affecting how quickly I lost weight.

Hey! I use the depo shot and havent had any problems. But then again I wasnt having periods before I started the depo shot. My doctor suggest to me if I did not want to use the depo shot, try the patch. You might want to speak with your doctor about it. My doctor told me not to take the pill until two years after surgery because your body might not absorb the medicine. Good luck!

Depot I heard blows you up. The best birth control...and I swear by it, is Neuvo ring. You insert a little ring every month and remove it for 7 days, then insert again! Its awesome. It also increases effectiveness b/c you know we only absorb half of what we take in.

I've been on the depo shot for YEARS!! In the beginning I had all sorts of fun until my body regulated itself (got used to all of the hormones, etc.). In the long run...I am happy I stuck with it, because it's wonderful. Love the depo shot.

Are you able to use birth control with estrogen in it? (pills, nuvaring, patch) Many cannot use these because of the estrogen The Depo will get better with more time; eventually you will stop your periods. But in the mean time YUCK. Make sure to take Calcium if on Depo long term. I would look into the IUD (Mirena or Paraguard) for long term birth control with very little side effects. GREAT Good luck

I was on the Depo shot for years. My doctor put me on it after surgery because, on the pill, I was cycling every 2-3 weeks. It did take 2 shots before things regulated for me and after that I would just have some breakthrough bleeding every once in a while. I was recently taken off Depo because my hormones have bottomed out and I am perimenopausal. Now I am on Sprintec pill. I take it for 12 weeks straight and then have a placebo week. Good luck to you! I was on depot for many many years. I didn't get a period during that whole time, but I also gained a lot of weight. Now I am on Orthotricyclin Low and get my periods and have found that I don't have that bloated look about me since I went off depot. I know people who have tried depot and bled the whole 3 months. It just works differently for everyone. T.

I got the Mirena IUD last October and love it. I am having my surgery on June 4th and they said having the IUD is not a problem at all. Prior to getting the Mirena IUD I was having extremely heavy periods. My doctor tried the birth control pill for a while but that didn't help. She checked to make sure I didn't have anything wrong with my uterus and since I didn't, she recommended the Mirena IUD. Now I don't have a period at all! It can stay in for 5 years too. Very easy.

I chose a non harmonal IUD. So far so good. I had it put in 6 weeks after RnY. I never got a regular period before, now I do. Probably from weightloss, not IUD.

I am 8 months out of surgery, and I was on Trivora - a pill... they wanted to switch my BC because they felt like since I had the RNY that I might not absorb the pill as well as I need too. So I switched to the Mirena IUD and it is AMAZING. I've only had it for 2 months now, but so far, I'm loving it! They put it in, and I don't have to worry about anything for another 5 yrs!!! I used to have really heavy periods, and now it's like light spotting, and after 3-6 months you might not get a period at all. For the first 1 1/2 after I got the IUD put in, I had light spotting, but now i'm back onto a regular schedule, and Im loving it. I def recommened the IUD, i've been telling all my girlfriends lol. xoxo, Jasmine

Hey, I was on Depo for 5 years prior to my RNY. I did have akward periods for the first few months and then nothing at all for 5 years! Give it a few months and if it doesn't improve then see your obgyn.
