Question:
What kind of diet do you recomand before WLS?
I am going to have lap band surgery, and my doctor has asked me to lose some weight before surgery. I really love to hear some suggestions. — Nina A. (posted on January 29, 2007)

Hi Nina, It's Dan again. I had the lapband on Dec 4th. My Dr. had me go on
a liquid diet for 3 1/2 weeks prior to surgery. I was weighed 1 week after
surgery and I had lost 37 Lbs up to that point. I was on Optifast, 4 shakes
per day and 1 Optifast nutrition bar. It wasn't that bad and it tasted
good. The Optifast I got from the Dr. but you can go to their web site and
they will tell you were the nearest place to buy them is. Hope this helps.

It's always a good idea to be on a low fat diet prior to surgery to shrink
your liver. The liver rests right on top of the stomach and the smaller it
is at surgery time, the better. Ask the nutritionist for a meal plan and
follow it. Having the shakes is a good idea too. I lost a little prior to
surgery and my surgery was as easy as pie...took only 1 1/2 hours!

I just had surgery two weeks ago. My docotor told me to do the low carb
diet two weeks before surgery. I could only have 40 grams of carbs a day.
Like the other person said, it helps shrink your liver. Who knew. If I
was you, I would ask your doctor. Good Luck!

Nina, i lost twenty pounds doing the high protein diet, which means no
rice, bread, pasta, potatoes. It is rough at first but it really works. I
also replaced my morning meal with a protein shake. Good luck!

Hey Nina,
I am having RNY surgery on 2/15 - got my surgery date today. My surgeon has
everyone who has surgery with him to go on a 1000 calorie a day - liquid
diet 2 weeks prior to surgery. So slim fast and water for me... fun stuff.
I've known two people who have had surgery with this surgeon and all lost
mass weight following this. One lost 22 lbs. Another lost 36 lbs. I start
on Monday the 5th. I will let you know. BTW - the reason my surgeon does
this too is the whole shrink the liver idea prior to surgery. Good luck.

Hi Nina! I had RnY on December 1, 2006. I had to loose 5% of my weight
for my insurance to approve me. I did Weight Watchers and tried to keep it
low carb as well. I lost more than I was required to and I am so glad I
did. Good Luck!
