Question:
Menstrual Cramps and Naproxen
Before surgery I was prescribed Anaprox (Naproxen) for period cramping. I know that I can't take that anymore. Has anyone been prescribed anything that we can take by their Gyno? I am going on the 29th and would like to know what to ask for if they don't know how to handle gastric bypass and medications that we can take. — col381 (posted on December 4, 2005)

Before surgery I maybe once had cramps and rarely had a period. However,
after surgery I am as regular as one can be and get cramps like no other.
I have been doubled over on the floor before and almost to the point of
passingn out, and believe it or not childrens chewable tylenol has worked
the best for me. I would give that a try before you take any
prescriptions. I have found that the Target brand is the best.

I currently use birth control for cramps. I didn't really have any before
my surgery in many yrs. , but since they are bad , i mean real bad. I went
on the "patch " birth control for other reasons and to be honest
I don't get cramps with the patch . Talk to your Dr. about that one.

I too had issues with my period and had to have the pill to have a regular
period. My periods are becoming regular now but the pms and cramping is as
worse as ever. The doctor said that since they have removed most of the
newer pills used for pain that I could use advil just to make sure I take
something like pepcid to help with the acid and only the prescribed dose
and only when I need it. I find I only need to take it at night and only
for a day or two due to the cramping in the middle of the night that wakes
me up.

Ok, so I know that is going to sound wierd but here goes. I did not start
having really bad period cramping until after I had my tubes tide. It was
so bad, every month I was going to the doctor and every month he was giving
me a different type of narcotic. Finally, after like six months I suggested
that he give me the Depo Provera shot. I had started on the shot as soon as
I had my daughter and for maybe..... six months before I got my tubes tide.
I did not have a period at all, thus I had no cramps. SO, that may be a
suggestion. Also, there was another medication I was given it was called
Indocien. I am not sure if I spelled it right, but its a samll green
capsule. It helped some, but the shot has worked wonders.

Well, I have 2 suggestions. First, I found some relief from using a
topical ibuprofen. I bought some online that seemed to help quite a bit,
but you can have a compounding pharmacy make a prescription strength cream
for you. It will absorb through your skin - you can put it right on your
stomach or back - wherever the problems are worst. It will still absorb
into the system but those areas will get more concentrated meds. The other
suggestion is for really bad days either Tylenol 3 or Vicodin. I have had
to resort to using a Vicodin a couple of times to get me through the worst
parts when usually Aleve or Advil would work. You just have to switch
gears. But don't let the docs get all fussy about 1 or 2 Vicodin a month.
That is something that if you need it can help take the edge off something
really nasty and let you get through it. Thankfully my periods are much
easier now that they've regulated so I don't really need anything usually.

Hi! Bentyl (dicyclomine) 20mg is a smooth muscle relaxer. It is used for
cramping with irritable bowel but it works great for mestrual cramps too.
Tylenol just doesn't cut it for me. Good Luck!

I am 3yrs postop & have been taking Naproxen prescribed by my Dr. for
cramps & I don't have any problems. My surgeon knows I use this &
is fine with it.

Google this: Menstrual pain and vitamin E. I've been absolutely blown away
by the results I've gotten. There's no need to suffer or to go through the
hassle of having to go to the PCP when vitamin E can do the trick for you.
Let me know if you try it !
