Also, the doctor have me taking 50,000unit of vitamin D one soft gel a week. Is this right or do I have the units wrong? — Toby2 (posted on September 24, 2008)

Hi Nevalle,
Don't know about the centrum capsules (I would imagine any drug store). My
dr. has prescribed 50,000 IU vitamin D soft gel for me, so yes, the units
are correct.

Don"t waste your time or money on Centrum, they don"t have any
significant amounts in them. You should be taking a good
"liquid" vitamin / mineral supplement like VEMMA. It has 1000 IU
of Vitamin D3. If you took it daily that would be 70,000 units per week.

Yes, I believe you have the units right. I was very deficient in Vitamin D
prior to surgery (most people are Vitamin D deficient!), so he put me on
the 50,000 IU for 8 days, then has me on 1,000 IU a day.

Be careful with the Centrum. I started taking Centrum Silver and broke out
in red itchy spots on my feet (and other places). I asked for help here on
this and was told that a lot of people are allergic to the Centrum. So if
you take it beware that you could break out or have some type of allergic
reaction.
As far as the soft gel... my surgeon told me not to take any type of soft
gels... we don't have the acids in our pouch to dissolve the gel part. You
may want to double check on the type of pill he told you to take along with
the # of units. I take Caltrate with vitamin D (chewables) and my tests
have come back fine.

I took 50,000 ius of D3 for a def in D too...My last labs for D was high at
98! YAY! So I take it once every two weeks now. It took 6 months to
build it back up! It seems many people are having trouble with Centrum
Silver...I don't use that one...It doesn't have the same vits at Regular
Centrum...and the regular one doesn't bother me at all, even taking two a
day for 6 months...I'm back to one centrum chewable daily and no troubles
(except I need to take it after lunch cause it does bug my pouch on an
empty tummy)...I am going to look for a vit capsule though soon...I have
had no time lately...
Our bodies are just not the same after surgery...some people can't handle
some things that normally would be fine pre-op...and some can handle things
that many of us cannot. We all adjust differently...Just because a handful
of people cannot take Centrum Silver does not mean that All Centrum
products should be banned! I hate the same flavor of them every derned
day...Some days I just cringe at the thought of taking my vits. That's how
I got so low to begin with...I hated the flavor. Now I KNOW I have to take
vits and I just deal with the flavor...Gotta do whatcha gotta do! I still
sware by Centrum as being a wellrounded good vitamin...It's not my ideal
perfect vit supp...as I have not found one yet...Not one liquid or chewable
or powder or tablet...

I take the 50,000 units of vit D (rx is called Dristol) once a week. I
usually buy the Centrum on drugstore.com. They have a chewable version,
plus they have a chewable silver version (for people over 50).
