Question:
I am 5 years post op and recently developed severe diarrhea.
I am now in the hospital trying to get this to stop while being fed through a picc line that moves liquid nutrition directly into my aorta. ll tests have come back normal. No bleeding, bug, worms, infections, inflamation, nothing that explains what is going on. Anyway experienced this and hopefully solved the problem? Kristy H. — Kristy H. (posted on January 12, 2008)

That is terrible. I am 4 1/2 years post op. The only time that happens is
if I eat something with too much sugar. I will keep you in my thoughts for
a speedy recovery.

My wife and others I know had a similar problem. Your doctor will have to
run more tests. In the case of my wife, she had an intestinal bypass in
1980, and this was revised to a RNY due to ongoing health problems. Her
small intestines were hooked back up after being unused for 27 years. I
imagine most of her problems stemmed from the food beginning to go through
atrophied small intestines. Normally the small intestines (according to the
surgeon) is the diameter of your thumb. My wife's were the diameter of her
small finger. So they had to "stretch" to accomodate regular food
flow again. The pic line was to make sure she got nutrients, as she could
not keep anything down. Your doctor may need to put an endoscope down to
check for blockages. You didn't fully explain your symptoms that cuased
the pic line to be used.
