Question:
Will a McDonald's Egg Mcmuffin w/half the muffin be bad?
I will probably only manage about 3-4 bites but I was thinking it has protein... — lynnbrink (posted on March 2, 2006)

It really depends on how far out you are. If you are still doing pureed
foods, or just started soft foods, you will most likely be unable to handle
it. I really couldn't handle bread products until about 5 months or so
post-op. My best advice is try it, eat the protein portions first and then
take small bites and chew the heck out of it...but remember, DON'T DRINK
anything for like 30 minutes after if you are able to keep it down. Adding
liquid to that mix will be extremely uncomfortable.
Good luck!

Gosh I get so upset when I see questions like this why do people start
eating the same stuff that made them over weight to begin with I am almost
a yr. out and I still haven't introduced bread to my diet. I try and keep
all my foods to be low fat no sugar and high protien. PLEASE is someone
reading this that hasn't had surgery or just had it don't eat the fat stuff
it will make you fat again. Quote from my dr. I gave you the tool now it is
up to you to go through with it....

Are you REALLY serious about having the surgery. This is what most likely
got you where you are now. You better revisit your dietician and or
shrink. To even think about things like this will make you fail very fast.

Oh, Maggie, don't do it! Egg McMuffins got a lot of us where we are, and
even half of one is not your best choice. Check out the nutritional value
here: http://www.mcdonalds.com/app_controller.nutrition.index1.html (arrow
down to Breakfast)
You'll be getting 12 grams of fat, 230 milligrams of cholesterol, and a
full third of your day's allowance of sodium. You remember sodium, that
nasty stuff that makes you bloat?
Yeah, it has protein, 17 grams of it, but there are better ways to get it.
Leave the junk food to the teenagers with the super high metabolisms. We
need things with more protein and fewer calories. If you're out, and
absolutely have to find something for breakfast, you might eat the middle
only, or try for scrambled eggs only, but you're taking a big hit on the
salt and fat either way. Better you keep a protein bar in your pocket for
emergencies. If you hafta, hafta, HAFTA have a pig out, OK, but please,
don't make a habit of this! Think back, do you want to go back where you
were? Love you, sister, want only the best for you!

Maggie,
I am not here to flame you, however I was reading your profile and you
aren't even 2 months post-op yet. I was a year post-op before I had bread
in my diet. If you have been released by your surgeon to experiment with
different foods and you want eggs I would suggest making them yourself that
way you can control the fat a bit better. I hope this helps ...

Maggie, it would not be a good option at all for you, being a newbie you
really need to fight the urges to eat junk/fastfood. This is your
honeymoon time, at 1 1/2 months post-op it is imperative that you make
healthy choices. If you are like most of us, McDonalds is one of the
reasons we took such drastic measures with WLS. Remember, it's a lifestyle
change, now is the time to develop good habits. Best wishes, Dana

Everybody CHILL. She asked about an Egg Mcmuffin, not for permission to
eat your soul. Geez. Now. You didn't say why you want this item .. if
it's a quick easy breakfast you're after, you can indeed make your own eggs
very quickly and a lot more healthfully. Boiled eggs are GREAT and can be
made ahead. If you don't like 'em boiled, just whip one or two with a bit
of water (not milk, milk makes 'em runny.) Pour it into a hot nonstick
skillet, let it set, and push it around a little with a spatula. This
takes literally three minutes, and it's delicious and has great protein.
If you leave out the yolks, even better. All the protein's in the whites
anyway. If you want an Egg Mcmuffin because they're your favorite and you
miss them .. give it time and find a substitute. It'll pass, and you will
wonder why you even bothered with them in the first place. :)

TO THE POSTER BEFORE ME.
You WENCH Jeanie. Get off this support group go somewhere else. She is
here for support not to hear you BS.
Maggie, try to get pouch for dummies i've heard it's a good resource. I
would speak to you nutritionist so they can discuss what you can and cannot
eat. You really should not be eating these types of foods. This surgery
is our tool and if we don't use it properly than we went through all this
for nothing. I'm 3yrs. out and drifted with about 20pds and now i'm just
trying to go to the basics. Good luck email me if you would like.

Maggie -- While I agree with our peers that an egg mcmuffin is not the best
choice of food, especially since you are only 2 months out from surgery, I
do not agree that if you want a taste of an egg mcmuffin you shouldn't have
it. I am 9 months out from surgery and while I do not eat fast food, every
once in a while I crave a cheeseburger or an egg mcmuffin, so I buy one. I
take a bit or two, chew it well and then I'm done with it and toss the
rest. I have satified my craving and I can move on. Talk to your
nutritionist, I am sure he/she will have great suggestions for breakfast
foods that are much better choices and satisfy what you are looking for
when you think you want that egg mcmuffin. Good Luck.

1st Jeannie ignore what Jen says unless she was joking, which I hope she
was, that was good advice, for everyone else a little helpful advice is
probably needed,I haven't had my surgery yet, and I know McDonald's is part
of why I getting it, but isn't this board for help and solutions to
problems we face on a daily basis and advice on how other people have
handled similar situations? I don't know if your pouch will handle it but a
good substitue would be a light whole wheat english muffin, maybe just half
even, a egg - scrambled you don't need to add anything to it, a slice of
fat free cheese, I can't believe it's butter spray, put it all together and
you have something similar to satisfy your taste buds, you can make it the
night before and microwave it in the morning. Again don't know if you pouch
can handle it but it's a healthy alternative. Best of luck. LOL Jen

Well. My scrambled egg recipe may not be to everybody's liking, but I
didn't think it was so bad I'd be ordered off the board. :) Jen R, I
can't email you to discuss whatever I said to offend, so if it please you
to email me?

I am the poster... Wow, what a controversy! I really appreciate all of the
feedback except for maybe Patricia's. My situation has been this.. I have
been so worried about getting all my protein in that I have basically been
sticking to just the shakes. In addition, I have been feeling kinda queasy
and nothing really sounds good. I passed a McDonalds the other morning and
I was wondering if a Mcmuffin (really just the meat and egg portion) would
be ok because the thought of it did not make me want to puke, not that I
could really eat much of it anyway, maybe a couple of bites. But thanks to
all the veteran advice, I will be refraining from McDonalds completely!
Thanks for the advice and support!

Wow I am new here and you people are scaring me. I don't always think that
everyone is here because of McDonalds. I personally do not eat a lot of
junk food, nor have I ever. I am not fat because of McDonalds. Nobody is
fat BECAUSE of McDonalds it is because of self control regarding McDonalds.
I think it is unrealistic to think just because you have a surgery you can
never, ever have something like that again. What about 1 every six months?
I know as someone who is just starting my journey this post and certain
people scared me with it. It seems some are not so supportive but scary
preechy.

Jen, it's all good. :) I tend to agree w/you; Patricia's post was mean
and uncalled for. Maggie, I can totally understand where you're coming
from. Good lean protein that's appetizing isn't hard to find if you know
where to look .. egg whites, lean bacon, fat free refried beans, light
cheese, cottage cheese, skim milk .. As a Band patient, I don't pretend to
know much about the post-RNY diet; some of these may not be so great, but I
know you can find what you need. Best of luck to you on this journey. :)

People, I think Patricia was just trying to help. I know some people who
had the surgery and then wwent back to poor eating habits! However, I
think just the eggs and meat of the egg Mcmuffin would be okay
occassionally. I do have to say that I am over a year out, and still
cannot eat eggs or egg substitute. I get sick and throw up that frothy
white stuff. Yes, even if i eat just a little. My niece dcould eat eggs
right away, though.
So, Maggie, just try a tiny bit and see what happens.

I eat them when I want them, which isn't often. Your question was can you
eat a few bites with only one muffin? I'd say yes, but I technically
should ask how often? I assume you mean when you're on the run and it's
that or nothing. Personally, i use protein supplement for protein and food
for food. So, I don't count the protein or fats in an EMcM, but I do
concern myself a bit with the carbs. But again, I eat 2-3 a year. I also
don't think it's a character flaw or anything to want to live in the real
world, which is where we are after the initial break-in period. I still
avoid milk & sugar, take my vites & protein, drink my water, eat 4
smallish meals, but I live in the real world.

Maggie, I had my surgery on Dec 12, 2005. I recently made my own egg
muffin, I ate 2 or 3 bits and was done. Did not get ill or throw up. I
lightly toasted a lite low-fat english muffin and sprayed with I Can't
Believe It's Not Butter,
I beat an egg in a small microwavable correlle bowl, microwaved for 1
minute or until done, ran my fork around the edges so the egg was in 1
piece put it on the muffin with 1 slice of fat free cheese and one broken
slice of turkey bacon
BROILED crisp on a rack and thoroughly blotted. It satisfied my craving.
However it's an individual thing. Proceed with caution and use every fat
free or sugar free item on the market including fat free mayonaise, ice
cream, butterspray, Equal or SugarTwin, Crystal Light, sugar free iced tea
etc and you can do ok. Bill Simpson

Hear hear Michelle! You hit the nail on the head. We have to live in the
real world. I'm nearly 3 years out - have lost 150 lbs and have maintained
my weight for at least 18 months now. Did I eat Egg Mcmuffins at 2 mo
postop? NO! Did I eat them at 6? NO. Would I now? Maybe if I was
traveling and we needed to stop someplace quick for breakfast. I would
probably have a few bites of the muffin and eat the egg and call it good.
No guilt. I'm done feeling guilty for every bite I put in my mouth. I'm
far from a saint, but if I screw up, I start back on the straight and
narrow as soon as I can. I eat protein first, drink my fluids, take my
vitamins. If I have candy or some other kind of crap...I will enjoy it and
go from there. We do have to figure out what will work for us in the real
world. I'm done having food mess with my head. If I can maintain my
weight and be healthy, I've done my job. - Lori J.

AMOS MOD NOTE: Please Everyone be nice! AND NEVER POST ANOTHER PERSONS
PRIVATE E MAIL ADDRESS ON THE SITE ANYWHERE! Its aganst the TOS! I had to
remove a post because of this.. ==========================================
Taking off my moderator hat, and being a post op of nearly 5 years, I
learned this many years ago and use this approach. When I get a craving for
something bad I first try to ignore it, but if it continues I will go ahead
and have it. For ME its better to eat a little, than binge on something
denied. Once your outt a few years this becomes more of a issue. Real early
on bread can cause troubles, if it had been me I would eat mostly the egg,
and a tiny bit of the muffin. Its good the original person is trying to get
away from total dependence on protein shakes since long term they arent
filling, and thus dont provide saiety. we need some filling food too. so
the pouch says feel pressure we are full:)

Ok, I'm a McDonalds employee, over 3 years post-op. I agree it's NOT the
best food out there nutrution wise, you can make it safer to eat! I eat one
almost everyday, I seperate the sandwich and eat the egg alone, first. Then
I eat the muffin half with canadian bacon & cheese. I dont eat the
hashbrown and I never drink with my meals. I have maintained my weightloss
still.
I do agree Maggie, thats its way to soon for a muffin, but test your
pouch and live and learn hon!

wow is all I can say to the negativity posted here. I eat egg mcmuffins
ocasionally, tho I prefer the breakfasrt burrito. A few bites of egg,
cheese and canadian bacon is really not a mortal sim that will force you to
fail and live forever in obesity. I am 3 1/2 years out and I live in the
real world. omne where therre are says where I am running all day and don't
have time to stop. If I skip eating my blood sugar drops a lot and I get
shakey and seaty and cold and lightheaded. better to have a couple bits
of an egg mcmuffin than to pass out behind the wheel of my car. I do tend
to carry protein bars for an emergency, but sometime forget to restock.
I think you are smart to get your protein from food, it provides satiety.
I can say strongly if I have something like a breakfast burrito or
mcmuffin, I am full for hours. fat provides satiety and the density keeps
it in my pouch longer. I don't do this on a daily basis, but i do on
occasion. So according to many of the posters here I am doomed to
failure. Good thing my body hasn't gotten that message, 3 1/2 years
postop, down 130 pounds and weight stable with in 5 pounds for over 2
years now!
