My nutritionist told me that I need 70 grams of protein a day for women.
If you feel you are getting that amount of protein in your food then you
are okay. It's more for men, but I don't know what the count is. Hope that
helps you.

My surgeon's Registered Dietician got ALL OVER ME for drinking protein
shakes. I had RNY on March 2, and this was about the end of the 1st week
of may. I had emailed her with a question about how many calories we
should be taking in at that length of time out (I think I was about 10
weeks out). Here was her answers: "Keep up the activity and in
regards to the food, don't focus on your calories....that is your old
dieting brain. Most bypass patients eat on average 600-1100 calories per
day in the first year but if your only focusing on calories then your not
looking at the fuel your putting in your body. We would like you to
instead focus on protein, fat and carbs Ensure your getting >65 grams of
protein per day, less than 120 grams of carbs and less than 48 grams fat
per day. The website fitday.com may be helpful in letting you know what
your currently fueling your body with from a macronutrient standpoint. NO
more protein drinks if you're meeting your protein by food....and you
should be by now. Make an apt to work with me, I look forward to seeing
you!!!" Aside from that, it has been my experience that the shakes
have more calories than I'd like to have sometimes, so I save them for when
I've had a hard day and one or more meals have gotten "stuck" and
won't go down. When that happens, I need to throw them up, and of course,
then I'm going to be low on my protein requirements, so I'll have a really
delicious Inspire Peanut Butter Cookie or Peanut Butter Fudge shake.... or
something a little lighter, like Syntrax Nectar's Fuzzy Navel fruity shake.

I too find that I can usually get my potien without the shakes. I do resort
to a protien bar if I am running and don't get enough for the day.
