Why does your doctor want you to have the gastric sleeve?

"Y" would you want the Gastric Bypass? The VSG is almost exactly as effective, and you do not have to deal with the SIDE EFFECTS that come with the RnY. There is no need for special supplements with the VSG, there is RARELY a problem with things like "Dumping Syndrome," excess gas, and loose stools unless you had these problems BEFORE the surgery, and there is no problem with the intestinal acids backing up into your stomach and your esophagus with the VSG. I am a little over a year out with the VSG, and have lost about 115 pounds. I could not be happier with the procedure, and I do not have to be concerned about being tied to a doctor's office for blood work, and supplements. I would highly recommend that you follow your doctor's advice, and get the VSG. He seems like one of the FEW doctors out there that actually has his paitents' HEALTH in mind instead of his healthy bottom line.

I just had the VSG done on March 25, 2009 and I have lost 50 lbs already. I chose this surgery because of the lack of complications and because you don't need as many suplements. I am very happy with this surgery. My doctor has told me that it can be consider the first phase of a RNY if I don't lose enough weight. My BMI was above 50 and he said I need to work out 150 mins a week this month and 300 mins a week next month and keep it up from there to see the results I want. I had a total of 162 lbs to lose. I am using the Leslie Sandson Walk at Home DVDs and they are easy to do and burn lots of calories. I also do a toning video. The workouts and toning help build muscle and tighten the skin its better for your body all the way around. I have a friend that was set on the RNY and the doctor told her he might have to start off doing the VSG for safety concerns. She is not happy with that but she is willing to accept that her health is the most important issue. I had my gall bladder out previously and I'm not a drinker or smoker either. Maybe the VSG is actually going to be best for you. I truly hope you have peace over what surgery you end up having.

I am also 5'2", but weighed 351 lbs when I went to see Dr. Trotter (Spokane, WA). After my pre-op diet, I was at 336 at the time of my surgery. I had VGS on 9/5/2008 - here, nearly 9 months later, I have lost 97 lbs since surgery (129 lbs down from my all time high of 369). I have never been sorry I chose the VGS instead of the RNY - WE (the doctor and I) chose the VGS because of several factors - no revision of intestines, so not the severe malabsorption issues so many with the RNY face, not the problems with gas, dumping, (all the ones mentioned in the previous posts). I also know that if for some reason in the future I want to, I can have surgery for the bypass portion - but I am doing well - I am steadily losing about 2-3 lbs a week, and all my health issues have resolved. If you trust your doctor, I would listen to him. God Bless You! (And congrats on your upcoming surgery.)

You should listen to your Dr. He may be thinking of your health long term. I had VSG one year ago and have lost nearly 130 lbs. It has changed my life, yet I am able to have as normal a life as any weight loss patient. Do some serious research and really educate yourself. You may be surprised to find out just how successful the VSG is compared to Bypass, and how much healthier and happier the VSG patients are.

from what I have read the Sleeve is the better option since you do not have as many complications. Listen to the doctor.

Hi - not to be repetitive but all of the comments below, to me, are the best advice. I am 5'3" and weighed 300 lbs. I had the RNY on Aug 18, 2008 - a little over 9 months ago and I am very happy with the results. I have lost 120 lbs and have 30 to go. However, if I could have had the Sleeve, I would have preferred it for the same reasons as were given below. I have had no problems because I followed the rules. You will have the same restrictions but will not have to take the many supplement pills per day.
