Question:
I am allergic to Aspertame! Is there a substitute for S/F Jello & Crystal Light?

I am hopeing to have RNY late Ausgust or early September and notice how allot of patients use S/F Jello and S/F Crystal Light... these have Aspertame that I am allergic too. What can take the place of these two favorites for WLS patients?    — Gerry Smith (posted on July 2, 2008)

I am two weeks out of having my RNY. I personally cant stand artificial sweetners. I think the aftertaste is horrible. jello and the crystal light arent mandatory. for my liquid diet I had water, broth (even from creamed soups) herbal tea and 2%milk. If I needed a little sweetness I would add a splash of fruit juice to a large glass of water. My favorite is orange strawberry and banana from Dole.

Hi, Gerry. Wow, did your question hit home. I have no good answer, and I don't know how serious a reaction you have to Aspartame, but thought I would share something with you. I, too, was allergic to Aspartame and would get cramping and diarrhea if I consumed more than a packet or two worth of it. Just not worth it. After WLS, I have been able to tolerate it. This is wonderful for me because I wondered how I was going to handle going "sugar free." I hope the same can happen for you. dana

There is also a natural plant substance called Stevia. You can get it from a health food store and it comes in different forms, Liquid, pill and powered. Hope you like it! Laura

Another product that tastes good is SomerSweet by Suzanne Somers. You can buy it at her website or HSN. THe only bad thing about it is it is like brown sugar where it hardens easily.

I buy the packets of kool aid and add my own splenda to them instead of using crystal light. The 4c iced teas and flavored drink products are made with splenda. I can't use aspertame either because i'm breastfeeding and anyway aspertame isn't good for you anyway. Just look for different products and check the labels.

Crystal Light don't use aspartame. It uses Splenda which is 2 completely different things. If you read the ingredients...it don't say asparatame unless you are looking at one of the knock offs like Wylers or a few others that do use aspartame.

I'm 4 years out and just starting to become sensitive to some artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols are the WORST! OUCH! I recently switched to an all natural pant sweetener called Stevia...I get the plain, non-alcoholic, drops...It's 3 times as sweet as sugar and so you only need a few drops and it cooks well too. You can add it water and plain koolaids if you need a fru-fru drink! Or to lime or lemons and water...You can get it at the vitamin shop and some upscale grocery stores should carry it too...I've noticed it in a lot mor things lately too...rather than splenda...It's catching on!

Well, Splenda is a good choice, but I recommend Stevia. It is a plant that is used all over the world for sweetening. It is very concentrated when in it's purepowder form. It is a bit different from sugar taste and if you use too much it gets a licorice like flavor. The reason it is so much better thena the other choices is that it does not start a sugar response - your body does not throw out a lot of insulin like it does when you ingest sugar and some sugar substitues. You can find it in most stores, health food stores, and any international/ethnic stores. Try to get the pure white extract as some put in fillers ath ruin its taste. I use it and Splenda. Good luck.

Gerry, if I use any artifical sweetner, I use Stevia. Found out that splenda isn't very good for diabetics. If you want to check Stevia you can go to Stevia.com. I just gave up on any sweetner and now I drink things with nothing added.

Check out Whole Foods! You'll need an all-natural, organic substitute. Sugar cane is a great sugar substitute. It's about $3 at Whole Foods. When you go organic you really can't go wrong. Good luck!
